Oil check valve on M42 - what?
 

Need some help guys. I recently had some issues that required me to take off the head, and I think I might have misplaced an item... :| This is on a May '95 M42.

The guide I am mainly referencing at http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11162 says that there is an "oil check valve" that sits in the block... mine is nowhere to be found, neither on the head or in the block.

Does anyone happen to have a picture or a clear description on WHERE this is? And what it looks like? The best I can figure is that it is #9 here, but I honestly have no idea.

As usual I am very gracious for any guidance you guys can provide! :)

My engine is older but did not have this feature. I had the block machined to make one work and I've got some pics at home.

Here are my pics... As you can see, the part would not fit in the stock M42 block that I had from an E30. I had it drilled out and then ground down the rubber fitting until it was about 1/8" above the block deck so the head gasket would apply some positive pressure on the check valve seal.

So does the rubber piece go in as far as it can? Or should the head gasket be wrapping around it in the middle where the indent is?

Not sure if that makes sense hehe. I found the old one in my block, but the rubber piece was flush with the block. Just want to make sure I get it in there correctly.

Went ahead and just put the new one in, and it ended up sitting just above the block (maybe 1/16 of an inch).;. so I went ahead and just went forward with that. The head is now back on and I am just waiting for my timing tools to set the final timing on the cams... then putting it all back together! :|

Would anyone here be at all shocked if I mentioned that I stripped the threads on a water pump hole? :|

What did you have the torque set to on the torque wrench ?

Or were you doing it bare handed?

<Yes I'm being a smart a**> I'd chase the hole with a tap...... Maybe a helicoil is in order...

Well this was last night... if I'm not mistaken it was maybe what, 10nm? Either way it was stripped well before I even got to the point of using the torque wrench. Not really sure what happened to be honest, but somebody had their hands all over this engine before I got my hands on it. Not the first little naggle I've had to deal with during my head gasket repair. :|

Oh and yeah, the threads are toast, so I have an M6 helicoil and a 1/4 drill bit sitting in the car that I picked up during lunch.

Lucky for me if I'm not mistaken all the holes for the WP are blind (or sealed or whatever, still a mechanic terminology noob) so I won't have to worry about any shavings getting into the block right?
