What transmission fits on a M44 engine!!!!!

hi just joined here cause it seems to be the spot for 318ti fans and gurus, so 3rd gear is gone in my ti, can anyone tell me what other transmissions are a direct bolt on to the m44 engine? i have a junk yard close with a few pre 1995 bmws some 3s some 5s and i wanted to know if any of the tranys from them would fit.

so in short i have a 1996 318ti with a m44 engine and a toasted 5 speed
are there any other 5 speeds that will bolt in of older models

Any 3 series trans from a 92-98 e36 will work, either 4 or 6 cyl. (The 5 series may work, but I cannot confirm that.)

Just make sure when you put the new trans in you put trans. fluid in and syncromesh

aren't some different lengths as well? may have to get the front half of the drive shaft as well.

There aren't any differences between the ZF Trans from the M3 and the Getrag. From what I know there is some differences between the trans from a 5 and a 3

Yeah, the ZF trans out of a 328/M3 is longer than the Getrag. You'll need the front section of the driveshaft from the donor car too.

Any E36 prior to '95 is most likely going to have a getrag 250 in it, so you would be fine with one of those. I have no idea about the 5 series transmissions.

I think that the Getrag 260 from an E30 can be bolted up but it has to be shimmed. There are a bunch of threads on bimmerforums about it. The cool thing about the 260 is that 5th gear is an overdrive gear instead of 1:1 like in the 250 and ZF.

What he said. Youd need the single mass flywheel setup as well as the starter if using the e30 5spd with OD.

Wow thanks guys! That's exactly the info I needed, I think iam guna red more about shimming a e30 transmission cause i am sure they have one at the local yard for 50$

madfaber 04-03-2010 09:01 PM

ok, I looked for info on shiming to make a e30 trany with overdrive work with the e36 m44 engine and iam not really finding what i need, any one have a link or just wana tell me what needs to be shimmed and how much?

Bluebimma 04-25-2010 03:00 AM

Youre shimming the starter, not the transmission. It has to have proper alignment with the flywheel to turn it over.

Hey guys, I found this:

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/pts/1804308653.html

My second gear sychro is destroyed basically. It was that way when i got it and its been like 10k and she still rides out. ive had a manual since i was 15 so im pretty good at being gentle. But i do want to have the replacement on stand by. Will i need the front half of the drive shaft for this one?

Thanks in advance.
318ti.org is king

spidertri 06-22-2010 06:48 PM

Yeah, M3s came with the ZF 5spd transmission. You'll need to find the appropriate driveshaft combination to make it work.

dbsiphone 06-22-2010 08:17 PM

thx i thought i would need the drive shaft but the guy already parted it out.
