318ti M package with blown head gasket

5 Attachment(s)
It's a sad day, but my daughter's ti has blown it's head gasket and I am forced to dispose of the carcass. I don't have the time, space or tools for the repair or engine swap right now. I would like to move the whole car rather than part out. it is located in the Seattle, WA area.
It was going to eventually become my car, so I have spent a lot of time and money on replacements and upgrades in the last 500 miles:
new tires
new alternator
new belt tensioner and hardware
new starter
new wheel bearings
fresh valve cover gasket
transmission flush and filter
new air conditioning system ($1300)
new lift gate struts
new outside door handle trim
new driver's door inside handle, door pocket and door card fastener refresh
plastic water diverters under the wiper blades
new cabin filters w/new plastic baffle
new plugs
new air intake rubber boot and hose
new air filter
new HID headlights (not the cheap ones that fail)
Freshly cleaned and polished headlight housings

The car is silver with black leather trimmed/cloth seats. BMW Style 67 16" wheels. It has just under 175,000 miles. There is a small amount of damage to the front trim piece around the kidney grill on the passenger side, and the hood has a small dent just above that as well. All other panels are in good condition, with a few small door dings, etc. No rust that I can find. I have brand new fog lights and a front grill that I ordered before the head gasket incident. The report from the shop is that the 2nd or 3rd cylinder has slighting cupped valves along with the missing gasket. I was not driving the car, so I don't know how hot it got. Some of the suspension components were obviously replaced because the car drove very tight. The steering wheel and the driver's seat have some wear, but most of the interior is still very nice. Everything electrical still works perfectly.
This is an excellent engine swap candidate, whether you have an M44 waiting in the shop, or, as I was considering, transplanting a 6. Thanks.

BlackBMWs 07-11-2015 03:32 AM

Sorry to hear it failed, looks like you were doing a good job renewing it. Too bad you can't get a motor swap in, easy way to get back on the road.

Folks will ask, how much are you wanting for the TI? What model year is it?

GLWTS!

mojofilms 07-11-2015 07:01 AM

Sorry, it's a 1996. It's such a unique car I'd really like to see it brought back to life and not parted out. My daughter is in college and in need of a car, spending the money at a shop to get it going just doesn't make sense right now. I'd like to get around $1500, enough for a down payment on something else. Thanks.

BlackBMWs 07-11-2015 05:33 PM

FWIW, I found a running M44 for $475 I dropped in my 97 after I blew a head gasket off of Craigslist from a guy who rolled his TI. Runs strong and cheaper than the head work I will need to do for my spare motor.

I'd get yours if I was closer.

xxxJohnBoyxxx 07-11-2015 09:50 PM

What is a "Slightly Cupped Valve". Never heard of that type of damage. Most likely the head gasket is blown between cylinder 2 & 3 which will cause a lower compression number on those two cylinders as the compression leaks between the two cylinders.

Interested in what a cupped valve is if anyone can explain it to me.

Thanks, John S

Bump too

Hey , I'm just seeing this. I'm interested in a chat.

I don't think I can PM you here, but I'll go to CL and shoot you an email.

mojofilms 07-15-2015 01:26 AM

It appears BRADESTAR will be purchasing the car locally. Thanks everyone for your interest.

This car is in my driveway now. Thanks for everything Mojo!

My second TI, m-sport!

wolferj-RIP 07-20-2015 04:39 AM

Congrats on the purchase! Nice to see the car saved instead of scrapped!

jca 07-23-2015 05:55 AM

Nice looking ti. The wheels look good on it...glad that it's not going to be scrapped.

BRADESTAR 07-23-2015 05:13 PM

Yep. This one will be back on road. I'm going to look at a M44 this weekend.
I don't have the cajones to change to a six at this time, want to spend time planning it a bit more. I figure putting a M44 in there will be a good warm up for a six swap, and this thing will be back on the road sooner.

I've been looking for a non-sunroof TI for a long time and this is it. M-trim and LSD was bonus.

Being 6'4" I'm most impressed with the sport seats. Love them. They should be in every TI. Really like the '96 model too. OBDII, no emission stuff, no traction controls.

I'll probably include work done on this one in the thread I already started for my other one. So It'll be around on here.

BRADESTAR 10-14-2015 02:26 AM

I've done it now

Got a Zed to update this car with. Went to the insurance auctions and lucked out. 95K miles. $2400 when it was all said and done. Put a new battery on it and started it up today...

Almost feel bad, wasn't in that bad of shape at all. Guess we all go sometime....I'm hoping this one works out for me. I think there are tons of z's are out there and were garage queens. Good candidate these days.

What the hell do I do now!!!!

Fix it and enjoy... [emoji41]

Haha! I just realized this is the Z we were talking about. Looks fixable, but certinally a strong parts candidate for updating the Sport.

I'm a Vert guy so, I'd lean to get it back in shape. [emoji41]

Ahh! you're killing me. Already felt a little guilty.

It being a "bill of sale" title, I don't think I want to go that route, though it pains me....I'm not saying that I wont take it around the block a bit, top down of course. I'm 6'4"!

Everybody I told about this car was saying to repair the z and put it on the road. From the damage I saw and paperwork that was in the car, I think that the Z hit a curb most prominently at the front passenger wheel. The control arm is bent good, as is the tie rod on that side (unfortunately no joy rides!). Everything else looks OK, but who knows. It seems as if the Z was purchased from a dealership a month or two prior to this accident that occurred at 2:30 am. That was why the engine compartment looks so clean.

It's too bad this Z ended up in my hands.

I want to go for it. Still a little apprehensive. I jacked it up and was ready to drain fluids and take off the exhaust...Then put it back on the ground.

I think that I have a decent understanding of the mechanical aspects of this job. I got concerned with the electrical. I'll have to go to emission testing straight away to get tabs. I understand the EWS, SAP delete on the DME. Not really understanding how to get rid of the ASC and have the ABS intact.

I didn't think that the Z engine wiring harness would fit in the TI. So I went ahead and bought a '96 328i 5 speed harness and DME off of Ebay. The Z is a '98, I was thinking that I could take the '96 328i harness and simply plug it in to the '98 Z DME. The TI is a '96 and I figured getting the '96 harness would make things easier, as I don't think the SAP and ASC garbage would be included in it, the TI has neither.

I'm now concerned that this wont work. I've been reading up on things and something about Pin locations being different in the years of the DME. Not sure.

If that is the case and the DME and harness' have to stay together. Then I see the options as: Running the '98 DME and harness with all the extra crap on it. Or running the '96 stuff, but having the DME and cluster not match.

This is what is on my mind these days. Any info or linc's of similar swaps people know would be of great interest to me. I'm still looking too....

….I'm actually starting to think about putting the Z back on the road.

This Zed is NOT dead (pulp fiction). Back on the road.

I’ve screwed up, bought too good a donor, so it is back to the drawing board. The best laid plans….

I know this isn’t a Z3 forum. Though they should thank me because I meant to dismember, but this one got tags yesterday. The path to salvage title was easier than I thought. So incidently, and accidently, a Z has joined the fleet.

….and dang, jumpy little thing. Feels pretty dog-on fast. Don’t know if it’s the thrilling danger of the size of it, or the BMW 6, but I can see how it was smashed within a month of the previous owner purchasing it. Can get out of hand pretty quick, and fun, with traction control off. I understand now what all the hulabaloo is about with swaps into the TI. The 3.2 must just be silly, you crazy bastards.

Anyhow, I’m looking for a M44 to stick into the Silver TI…..Again….Whilst I was planning and thinking through the swap I felt stress and feel the 4 would be more my capability for now.

Roadrash if you see this minus well stick me back into “general discussion” as this great swap idea went bumpkiss.

Strawman 02-03-2016 07:23 AM

As someone who owns both a Z3 M Roadster and an M52-swapped 318ti, I recommend you seriously consider swapping the six into the 318ti, especially if the Z3 has a salvage title. Power is addictive, and you can part out the carcass to recoup your funds. If possible, try to drive a swapped 318ti completed by club member local to you (quite a few people have driven my rat-rod). Truth be told, my M52-powered 318ti is on par with my M Roadster in terms of power and civility. That said, two years after I completed the M44 to M52 swap, I'm now swapping an S52 into my 318ti... with plans to hot-rod it even more.

BRADESTAR 11-15-2016 09:32 PM

Finally time to get this project back on track, I’m going to get old Grey up and running over the winter. I’ve picked up a totaled club sport. M42 with a M44 head on it. I’m swapping interiors right now with thoughts of putting the entire club sport drivetrain in.

I’m trying to get out of this Z. Just posted for the first time…not a good time of year to sell a convertible around here. Haven’t heard anything.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5872418929.html

I assume that I’m too high. I paid $2400 for it, so there's room. I wonder though at what minimum sale price is it better to go back to the original plan of using these parts? Adding everything up, steering rack, medium lsd, alum block engine/tranny, matching speedo/ecu, etc. Not sure how low I should go trying to sell.

I’ve gotta go one way or the other soon. I can’t figure out if these are good problems to have or bad.

Strawman 12-15-2016 07:01 PM

Do the drivetrain swap from the Z3 to the 318ti -- you'll love it! Since my February post above, I have completed my S52 swap (replacing the M52), while also swapping in a Z3 steering rack and M3 front hubs/brakes. My car is transformed (again!). You can sell off the Z3 carcass after you get the 328ti going...

Agreed, I’ve seen the light! Strawman you are an individual of reason and I appreciate you for that.

FYI, this is what happens when one debates too long in the Pacific Northwest….a hard top remind you.

It’s going to make a comeback. So I’m working the motivation to replace the carpet. I read online to put Borax powder on mold…..do NOT put borax powder in your car!

https://s19.postimg.cc/npqxuwfnn/DSC...psdinhafpe.jpg

A vacuum worked perfectly fine…now this mess. I figure I’m going to re-do the interior/exterior, then the drivetrain swap.

BRADESTAR 01-09-2017 02:30 AM

Finally got the interior out of the Clubsport….took forever. Now to do it all over again on the hardtop and get things switched over. Clubsport looks like it had some sort of system installed. Zapco amp? A couple crossovers, sub and other things I don’t know anything about. Haven’t been able to get sub out yet. Speaker is in there tight and the fiberglass box is definitely bolted in.

Now to get out the rest of the Silver cars interior….can’t say I’m excited, but should go faster.

Starting to look much better!

As for the swap vs z3, as someone who drove a 2.8l z3 hardtop and eventually went with the m52 swap for my ti, I will say the m52/s52 fits the ti very nicely. It is a lot more practical, longer wheel base and is just as fun.

Good to see some updates! Sometimes projects have the sucky parts but eventually it will be worth it! (Hopefully )

BRADESTAR 02-22-2017 04:10 AM

I'm cleaning the club interior and planning on putting it in this weekend.

The thought of putting down Dynamat under the carpet has crossed my mind. I was surprised to see how expensive the stuff is though, never have used it. How does that stuff work out? Is it worth the $100 while I have the carpet out?

BRADESTAR 03-01-2017 05:06 AM

So, the Dynamat was a NO. I went to my local Car Toys to pick some up and grabbed the $140 box that was something like 20sqft., fuggin box was heavy! That gave me pause. I asked the installer over there if it comes up easy after installed. (Ie. Can rock it for a while then get rid of it easily) dude said “no way, it’ll leave a glue mess behind trying to get it off”. I asked if I could install without removing the glue back, just have the carpet hold it in place and he told me “that’s not how it works, needs to adhere to the metal”. Thanked him and left without. Heavier than I thought it would be. Maybe great upgrade in luxo-barge, not this TI.

Cleaned the seats and am currently trying to diagnose fuggin rain leaks. I had one in the hatch I knew about and got a new hatch seal put in which seemed to fix it. However, when I was celebrating that I noticed about quarter-inch of water sitting in the passenger floor that hadn’t showed itself till that day. It had showed evidence of leaks (mold) on the sheet metal that I had previously ignored and just cleaned up.

I don’t want to install the fresh interior without sorting the leaks. I don’t think that I’ve mentioned I only have a one car garage, so planning is a must. Was hoping to have the interior out of the garage before pulling in the Zed for break. this may take some additional time/planning.

My goal is to finish before Earl! So I’ll do my best to keep it moving, but getting ahead in ordering parts, planning, leaks, etc. is a challenge. Live and learn…..and then race!

Slow going. I’m impressed at how easy some people make all this seem. It’s moving along. I think I fixed all the leaks, or at least the big one that I had found.

Got through the Clubber, so one less of those on the road. I’m glad to have it gone, starting to finally feel like progress.

Now on to the Z! I’m hoping it goes faster since I’m only dealing with drivetrain. Also looking to find somebody that wants a Z project to take it and the drivetrain from the Club.

Whoo-boy. This is a lot of work! Going slowly. That 6 silly is a bigun.

I'm going to mess with some stuff whilst the engine/trans is out. Mainly a new clutch and flywheel that I have to put in that I am nervous as hell about. Those crappers cost about as much as the car...so hoping I don't mess that bit up! And other odds and ends.

Then I get to take apart another Ti....at least I'll be working on the final car though at that point. Was really hard pushing to get through the Z. By the end will have pretty well taken apart 3 cars....this is fun right? This is fun! Fun....
