318ti M package with blown head gasket

5 Attachment(s)
It's a sad day, but my daughter's ti has blown it's head gasket and I am forced to dispose of the carcass. I don't have the time, space or tools for the repair or engine swap right now. I would like to move the whole car rather than part out. it is located in the Seattle, WA area.
It was going to eventually become my car, so I have spent a lot of time and money on replacements and upgrades in the last 500 miles:
new tires
new alternator
new belt tensioner and hardware
new starter
new wheel bearings
fresh valve cover gasket
transmission flush and filter
new air conditioning system ($1300)
new lift gate struts
new outside door handle trim
new driver's door inside handle, door pocket and door card fastener refresh
plastic water diverters under the wiper blades
new cabin filters w/new plastic baffle
new plugs
new air intake rubber boot and hose
new air filter
new HID headlights (not the cheap ones that fail)
Freshly cleaned and polished headlight housings

The car is silver with black leather trimmed/cloth seats. BMW Style 67 16" wheels. It has just under 175,000 miles. There is a small amount of damage to the front trim piece around the kidney grill on the passenger side, and the hood has a small dent just above that as well. All other panels are in good condition, with a few small door dings, etc. No rust that I can find. I have brand new fog lights and a front grill that I ordered before the head gasket incident. The report from the shop is that the 2nd or 3rd cylinder has slighting cupped valves along with the missing gasket. I was not driving the car, so I don't know how hot it got. Some of the suspension components were obviously replaced because the car drove very tight. The steering wheel and the driver's seat have some wear, but most of the interior is still very nice. Everything electrical still works perfectly.
This is an excellent engine swap candidate, whether you have an M44 waiting in the shop, or, as I was considering, transplanting a 6. Thanks.

Sorry to hear it failed, looks like you were doing a good job renewing it. Too bad you can't get a motor swap in, easy way to get back on the road.

Folks will ask, how much are you wanting for the TI? What model year is it?

GLWTS!

Sorry, it's a 1996. It's such a unique car I'd really like to see it brought back to life and not parted out. My daughter is in college and in need of a car, spending the money at a shop to get it going just doesn't make sense right now. I'd like to get around $1500, enough for a down payment on something else. Thanks.

FWIW, I found a running M44 for $475 I dropped in my 97 after I blew a head gasket off of Craigslist from a guy who rolled his TI. Runs strong and cheaper than the head work I will need to do for my spare motor.

I'd get yours if I was closer.

What is a "Slightly Cupped Valve". Never heard of that type of damage. Most likely the head gasket is blown between cylinder 2 & 3 which will cause a lower compression number on those two cylinders as the compression leaks between the two cylinders.

Interested in what a cupped valve is if anyone can explain it to me.

Thanks, John S

Bump too

Hey , I'm just seeing this. I'm interested in a chat.

I don't think I can PM you here, but I'll go to CL and shoot you an email.

It appears BRADESTAR will be purchasing the car locally. Thanks everyone for your interest.

This car is in my driveway now. Thanks for everything Mojo!

My second TI, m-sport!

Congrats on the purchase! Nice to see the car saved instead of scrapped!

Nice looking ti. The wheels look good on it...glad that it's not going to be scrapped.

BRADESTAR 07-23-2015 05:13 PM

Yep. This one will be back on road. I'm going to look at a M44 this weekend.
I don't have the cajones to change to a six at this time, want to spend time planning it a bit more. I figure putting a M44 in there will be a good warm up for a six swap, and this thing will be back on the road sooner.

I've been looking for a non-sunroof TI for a long time and this is it. M-trim and LSD was bonus.

Being 6'4" I'm most impressed with the sport seats. Love them. They should be in every TI. Really like the '96 model too. OBDII, no emission stuff, no traction controls.

I'll probably include work done on this one in the thread I already started for my other one. So It'll be around on here.

I've done it now

Got a Zed to update this car with. Went to the insurance auctions and lucked out. 95K miles. $2400 when it was all said and done. Put a new battery on it and started it up today...

Almost feel bad, wasn't in that bad of shape at all. Guess we all go sometime....I'm hoping this one works out for me. I think there are tons of z's are out there and were garage queens. Good candidate these days.

What the hell do I do now!!!!

Fix it and enjoy... [emoji41]

Haha! I just realized this is the Z we were talking about. Looks fixable, but certinally a strong parts candidate for updating the Sport.

I'm a Vert guy so, I'd lean to get it back in shape. [emoji41]

Ahh! you're killing me. Already felt a little guilty.

It being a "bill of sale" title, I don't think I want to go that route, though it pains me....I'm not saying that I wont take it around the block a bit, top down of course. I'm 6'4"!
