Las Vegas hotel recommendations?

I'm heading to San Diego to visit a friend for a week, she has to work all week so I figure I'll head to Vegas for a day (drive there on Thursday, party that night, and head back to San Diego on Friday). So.....I'm looking for recommendations for a hotel to stay for one night. I want to be on the strip and close to as many strip clubs as possible. :) Anyone?

roadrash 01-04-2007 02:01 AM

Wow... it's too bad you won't be able to tell us about your trip to Vegas since "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." LOL

I seem to remember that someone here is from Las Vegas, but I can't remember exactly who. You might check the regional forum and also post your inquiry there.

Have fun... but not so much fun that you end up in jail!

Are you going alone, and what else are you planning to do (clubbing, gambling)? All of the strip clubs are off-strip, so you're going to have to cab it anyway.

HuGo 01-04-2007 03:31 AM

Hey Dusten, ill head up there and we can party all night w/o sleeping lol  If i were to go i would have to hit a poker table no doubt.

Ive been to one already and honestly, its a really waste of money. But i wouldnt mind to go again. Maybe going once in a great freaking a while its fine. Not like my friends for like a good 6 months they would go every 2 weeks and spend 100+

It'll be my fiance and me. I'm not much of a gambler so I'd rather not waste any time with that. I know I can't see all of Vegas in one night, so what SHOULD we see in one night. We'll likely club hop all night, just curious what everyone recommends.

Club hop all night?

Guess you plan to waste your time (and money) doing that instead...
Take some money its gonna be pricey.
Can't really go wrong at The Palms, they have a really nice club there (pretty much the celeb choice, if you're into that)

MGM has a nice club too... Think its called Studio 54...pretty nice place. packed most of the time.

Mandalay Bay has House of Blues which is always a cool spot too.

For strip clubs, they are all off the strip, so just grab a cab and ask the driver which one is hot. There is a pretty big one across the freeway from Monte Carlo Hotel, I can't remember the name...."Scores", I think. But its got like 2 or 3 floors and supposedly the hot ticket for T&A.

oh yeah did I mention to take money... LOTS of it? :)

Make sure you have a good time......even though its pretty hard to have a bad time there.

ohhh your taking your girl with you. Nevermind then. Uuumm, better to sight see than go clubbing. Clubbing would be kool if you went with friends and want to pick up girls or whatever. Seeing that your going with your girl, dont waste your 1 night in vegas to club when you can club at madison or wherever your from. UUmmm somethings you can do...

-Go to Belagio, im sure your gf would like the water show there (outside) and they play some what of a romantic music so yea thatll be kool.

-Treasure Island, they have a pirate show with boats and explosions. (i think i might have heard something about they dont do it no more but not sure and why would they stop after years of doing this.)

-Gotta go to stratosphere all the way to the top. That thing is freaking HIGH!! and if you get on the ride that takes you even higher then just drops, thats a lot of fun. So put it this way. YOur already high as f*ck, then you get on this ride then they launch you up and when you go back down you literally get off your seat for like a second and it feels like you floating, its f*cking crazy, i love that ride. But if your scared of heights then FORGET IT, youll probably pass out)

-Circus Circus, they have a kool arcade spot on that casino. You can win prizes by playing some games and what not. On that same floor, they have shows too with clowns, or they have animal shows with smart cats and dogs, or they have people jumping from one end to another with ropes and that crazy circus sh!t.

-MGM, well you can just go there to look at the lions.

-Mandalay Bay, i think this is the hotel with a snow tiger.

-New York New York, they have roller coaster but to expensive for 1 ride in my opionion.

and more more stuff i dont remember but if timed correctly, you can do the following i put in just 1 day.

MAN!!! i feel like going now, i should go since i have 3 days and 2 nights or 3 nights and 2 days (however it works) free to a hotel room.

aceyx 01-04-2007 01:05 PM

There's no way to actually club "hop" in Vegas. They tend to queue you up outside the club for a good hour or so, so just stay at once place unless you really like waiting in lines.

Palms is good for the younger crowd but it's off-strip. Not really a big deal since cabs in Vegas are pretty much like pigeons in New York, but you really have to see the strip at night. It's just Americana. Studio54 (MGM), Ra (Luxor) are also notable, and on the southern end. I can only suggest these hotels by experience (and the Mandalay), but make sure they're not under construction when you visit. Stay away from Excalibur, Circus Circus and Paris, unless you like screaming bratty kids all the time. Next time I'm going to try the Wynn.

My advice is to make reservations at a restaurant before you get there and make that your first or second order of business. Vegas restaurants are generally owned/run by top chefs and all the food is excellent. If you get there earlier in the day, do the exhibits Hugo mentioned (note, TI has totally changed). The reef at the Mandalay is neat ($$) but the penguins at the Flamingo are free to watch.

Then, do a bit of gambling. You're in Vegas; you gotta. A hand of blackjack and some slots will do. Get some beer from the convenience shop and head back to the room to decompress/change (note: hard liquor is crazy expensive . If that's your poison, bring it from Cali).

Around 10:30/11, get in line for a club. Pay for drinks with cash, since open tabs are just annoying to deal with. Sometime before 3am, get a cab to a strip joint and stay however long your wallet allows. Spearmint Rhino, Cheetahs and Sapphire, in that order. You can easily run through $100/hr in any of these places, more if you're paying for your girl's dances.

In the morning, get the breakfast buffet at the Bellagio. There is also a breakfast joint further up the strip, but I'll have to ask around for the name of the place. Check out through the tv, then head to the pool before your room card stops working. Sleep off your hangover, relax a bit, then hit the road.

If you're just grabbing a quick bite, I suggest both Fatburger and In-n-Out. But you should already have had both while in Cali.

DustenT 01-04-2007 02:25 PM

Excellent. Thanks for the advice guys. This is exactly what I was looking for, now I have a hit list. :)

I was hoping it would be warmer than 60's, but I shouldn't complain...

HuGo 01-04-2007 10:59 PM

WHAT!?!?!?! They have penguins in The flamingo???? Gotta check that out next time i go. And i remember i think the snow tigers are at the mirage and not at the mandalay bay. But anyway, Dusten, if anything you need to take my advice at, go to the stratosphere. Its tall, youll see the whole city. The reason why i think its a little nicer than just going to any downtown building is cause at night, Las Vegas strip is VERY brighten up. Its not white or yellow lights like youd see in downtown LA or NY. And theres a restaurant up there but i havent ate there. Try this too, start at the sahara hotel(beginning) when its dark, and just walk down to New York New York (sort of the end) on one side, and walk back on the other side of street. Youll walk the whole strip, see everything and i guess good exercise, itll be 6miles round trip but you wont even feel it.

Anyway, whats an open tab? Where you dont pay until you leave? Anyway, next time i go 2 vegas, i wanna go to every hotel there on the strip. I know every hotel has their specialty at something.

aceyx 01-04-2007 11:06 PM

A word of advice: don't try to steal the penguins. They'll ban you from the premises.

Two other things I remembered: Try and check out the light show at the old strip. Just check out the old strip itself, much easier since you'll be driving. Old Vegas and new Vegas are like night and day.

Since you're with your fiance, maybe do a gondola ride at the Venetian. Earlier in the day is better (fewer gawkers, shorter line). They'll sit you with others unless you get a private boat, so don't be afraid to approach (non-weird) people in line asking if they want to share. If it's not your cup of tea, you're not missing out on much if you skip it.

HuGo 01-04-2007 11:19 PM

isnt that boat like 50bucks or something? Are the penguins open and not behind glass? I gotta handcuff myself if i go see the penguins just so i dont take one, lol jk. Are they the nice penguins or the ugly ones?

wasabinuki 01-05-2007 12:14 AM

Stay at Hooters. It's cheap, newly remodeled, should eliminate your need to go to a strip club, and it's in an awesome spot. Right across the street from the MGM which is right across from NYNY. Instead of driving up FLY from San Diego. It's cheap and will save you a minimum of 10+ hours in a car and you will get to spend more time in Vegas. And if you're flying you can get hammered drunk and not have to worry about a DUI.

Oh, and go to the Hofbrauhaus for a liter - which is right across the street from the Hard Rock.

HuGo 01-05-2007 08:48 AM

wtf, there's a hooters hotel now??

Dusten- what days will you be there? I spoke to a coworker whose daughter assists with event planning there- A list stuff (Playboy, Shaq's Bday, etc). PM me with your details- I'm sure she'd have a recommendation and maybe more. Thursday is an odd day for the serious events though.

BTW this coworker recommended seeing the Cirque du Soliel show "O". Amazing show, all with water on the stage but tix will be expensive. Not exactly a strip club but hey.

Don't want to promise anything really- I'm good friends wit the mom but never met the daughter.

Thursday January 25th. I still haven't decided if I'm going to make the drive for sure or not. I'd really like to, since I've never been there before, but I'm thinking Vegas might require more than 1 day to really enjoy. How is the drive from San Diego to Las Vegas? Mapquest says it's about 5 hours. How long does it take in the real world with traffic?

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!

LMFAO! 5 hours? put it this way, vegas is North from LA. And San Diego is south of LA. I live in LA. From LA to San Diego could be 2.30-3hrs. From LA to Vegas 4-5hrs. So yea, BUT, it could be 5 hrs cuz maybe its a complete different route going strraight up. Id say 6-8hrs.

Sorry, thought you had more time on your hands there. So since no one is asking the obvious question I'll ask it- you're fiance is down with strip clubs? This begs some clarification.

She likes strip clubs. I think it started when we were in New Orleans (pre-Katrina) and we stopped at Lynn Flynt's Hustler's Club on Bourbon Street. Those girls are amazing and incredibly talented. Fake boobs in my face makes me happy and she like to watch the sweet spin tricks.

wasabinuki 01-07-2007 08:09 PM

FLY to Vegas - you won't regret it.

Like my momma sez a little mental stimulation never hurt no onez.

Bringing this thread back from the dead!

I didn't end up going to Vegas when I was in San Diego, just didn't work out with the girls I was staying with.

But....I'll be there from the 21st to the 24th this month, going with 3 other guys all ~26 years old. With that in mind...SUGGESTIONS please?

We are staying at Excalibur. Good bars/restaurant/club suggestions appreciated. We won't have a car.

aceyx 09-10-2007 09:26 PM

I highly suggest changing your hotel. Excalibur is family oriented, meaning screaming kids and annoyance at the pool.

The last time I went (about 5 weeks ago) we stayed at the Mandalay, and got a day bed at the Moorea beach club. Very worth it, not for the toplessness, but having space to move and very fast drink service.

Also, VIP tables at clubs are the way to go. You'll end up spending a little more, but you breeze past the line and don't have to go to the bar for drinks. It's pretty awesome. Let me know where you're going and I'll get you the phone number of who you need to get in touch with if you want to go this route.

DustenT 09-10-2007 09:36 PM

Crap, that sucks about Excalibur. We picked it because of location and price. I wonder if I can change it.

wasabinuki 09-12-2007 07:19 PM

The Excalibur is not the greatest, but it will be fine. All you do at the hotel is sleep anyway. I don't know what you're into, but personally I hate clubs and prefer bars/pubs. Whenever I'm in Vegas (and it's at least 6 times a year) I hit up the following joints:

Hofbrauhuas (right across the street from Hard Rock)

The Double-Down Saloon (kick ass dive bar within walking distance to Hard Rock)

O'sheas (they have cheap table games and BEER PONG TABLES)

Shadow Bar (inside Caesars)

MGM Grand (for some electronic horse races - $.25 a minute - so $20 and you can gamble/drink all night and hang with some fun people)

NYNY (Nine Fine Irishmen is a great pub)

Monte Carlo (There is a brewpub inside the casino that sell 5 liter towers of beer)

Beauty Bar (way downtown and a cool place if you want to get off the strip for a while)

Don't worry about having a car, in fact it's better you don't. Driving in Vegas sucks! Some hotels offer shuttles to other hotels, but most of the time we take taxi's everywhere.
