Idle Issue's My TI doesnt idle well on morning starts, goes to 1000rpm then drops to 800rpm which normal when warm. Have tried the following fixes! replaced coil replaced ECU just recently replaced Idle step motor. no luck, car runs fine when wrm and no other issues. Just at start up when cold...!!!!! BMW mechanics thought it could have be a hair line crack in cylinder, this is not the case because I am not losing water through this. PLEASE HELP. |
have you fixed your problem? |
Not as yet, I have just got my air conditioning re-gased and the guy put his reader on it and cleared some errors and has suggested that I may want to replace a hose and the PVC. This might sovle it, so I am going to try this and see how it goes. Actually the electrcian was a formerly worked for BMW! |

Sweet as, as soon as I organise a PVC and hose to fit I will post some feed back? |
Woksgolfy any update? having the same issue. Thanks! |
Hey guys this might be of assistance! I did a full service of my car it had a little idle problem the rise and dip in RPM. Did a full service today back on 5W-40W Synthetic Motor Oil, New Air Filer, Oil Filter. Removed Cat Back. (Cat Back was installed a moth back which was an after market one looked a little too small for the existing stock piping.) After i did all these mine just magically worked out fine. Hope you guys resolve yours soon. |
Oh and another thing my oil leak is no more! May be the oil? The previous oil i used was 20W - 60W maybe the culprit in my situation. |
20w-60!? Holy smokes. |
oil that heavy is usually used in motorcycle engines, the 5w-40 is a better choice |

Cheers guys it was an honest mistake never again aye :D |
Similar problem. Same thing, cold idle is up and down and wants to stall when I add throttle. At running temp car idles fine. Changed out plugs, vacuum lines, ICV and the valve running from crank case ( forgot name). No vacuum leaks or codes, problem not solved yet! |
Idle probs? My '96 ti has a really rough idle also... Sometimes it idles so badly that the entire car shakes. Occasionally it will completely cut out with no throttle power at all, even if you pump it. Best remedy whilst driving is to put the clutch in and rev the engine a few times...I find that generally it cuts out more often if I'm running the air con or CD player. At traffic lights it will drop to really low revs as if it is about to stall, every now and then it will actually stall. At first we replaced the oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and oil. When I bought it it hadn't been in regular use. From forum scouring I read that the MAF, can shaft sensor and IAT sensor can all be potential gremlins for idle problems. A few weeks ago it was run through a code reader and the cam shaft sensor code was thrown up. We have ordered a replacement but are waiting on shipping. Two days ago it got worse. It started 'putting', misfiring and backfired a few times. It currently sounds like a Suby :) I shall let you know how the idle problem goes when we get the part. |
Hi there I change my PVC and the hose as suggested some time ago....!!!!! and YES it solved my cold morning idle issues. Apparently, this is happens with the 318ti model (ex- BMW mechanic). so since we changed the "cloggy hose" and the PVC it works fine now.....!!!!! Thanks again for all your comments, lucky my auto electrician only charged my $500.00NZ for the 3 months trying to figure out my issue. We both learnt a lot over this period. So if your it has this issues have a think about this solution? cheers Woks |
