This would make a nice swap

If you have the auto tranny, then Isuzu's 3.2/3.5 DOHC V-6 will bolt up to it. Depending on the model year, it'd have 190-250 HP and loads of low-end TQ.
Of course, bolting it up to the tranny is where the "easiness" ends. But, if one was inclined to swap out the stock engine for anything else, this may be one of the cheapest/easiest to find.

Do you have any proof that this works? I just happen to have an Isuzu engine sitting in my garage at this point. (I used to own a trooper before my Ti)

Same transmission, the GM 4l30e. (92+ Troopers).
Somebody on an Isuzu forum was talking about swapping a BMW engine into a Rodeo, but everyone figured that'd be lame.
The 3.2/3.5 in ti, though...that'd be smokin'!

Interesting. Maybe if I had some more time to do this I just might atempt it. But for swapping engines I think I'll stick to german only.

And here I was hoping you were talking about the early 90s 4cyl Isuzu engines :(

sacramentophil 12-01-2004 08:17 PM

heh...that would be quite a downgrade, with its 120-125 HP at the crank.

try 160, with 300 doable on a stock bottom end. :)

sacramentophil 12-01-2004 10:12 PM

160? Dude, we must be talking about different engines. :?
here are some dyno sheets from a '94 Amigo with the 2.6l 4ZE1:
http://www.houlster.com/amigo/turbo/dynoruns.htm
Before turbo, it didn't even put 100 HP to the wheels.
You're right about the bottom end, though...tough as nails.
Either way, this engine won't swap into anything but another 'Zu with a 4Z series engine.

So, if I may try to steer this back on-topic for BMWs...isn't it amazing what a little more sophistication in design/engineering can do for an engine?
1.9l BMW M44 = 138 HP
2.6l 'Zu 4ZE1 = 125 HP

yeah, I am talking about the 1.6turbo, or the 1.8 NA the put out 140. And that may be a decent swap, it would be kinda neat to see a fast, auto ti. I think all of the turbo, sc, or engine swapped tis are manual.

sacramentophil 12-02-2004 04:04 AM

I see...now we're on the same sheet of music.
Yeah, that would be worthy of consideration, especially considering you can build/tune that engine to far exceed the stock numbers. But, I believe it's backed by an actual Isuzu tranny, and so would not bolt up in a ti.
The 3.2/3.5 though...I have the 190 HP 3.2 in my '93 RS and it's pretty impressive, even in a 4K lb. SUV. There's also a supercharger avail. for the '98+ engines and the stock engine management system can adjust itself to some boost.

of course, this type of a swap would be far beyond my abilities...I just wanted to throw it out there because it would be a good one for the adventurous type.
