1997 bmw 318ti hatch issues...

Hello,
I'm new to this forum. So, please bare with me. I just bought my 318ti and I noticed that at night the dash (a/c control, hot/cold and vent knob) doens't have lights. This is located at the bottom of the stereo. I'm wondering if it's really doesn't have light or the bulb has been blown?

My other issue is both my back up light are out. Replaced both bulb but still the same issue. This weekend I will try and check the fuse. Any other ideas? Someone told me to check or replace the switch. Where is it located?

Please help, thanks.

Do your gauges light up?

That HVAC panel has a bulb (possibly more than one) that's probably burned out. It's kind if a pain to get at, but not too terrible.

As for the reverse. If you have an automatic transmission the switch is in the gearshift assembly. There's a multifunction switch in there. The reverse switch on a manual transmission is screwed into the side of the transmission. Check the fuse first.

how can I remove the hvac panel?

If my fuse is okay then I definitely, looking for this switch. thanks, CirrusSR22..

I'll give the HVAC panel a shot (from memory):

• Remove the radio
• Remove the clock (or OBC)
• Once those are out, you should find two screws in the openings. The screws are at the very top of the panel and are facing upwards.
• Pull the three HVAC knobs off. Behind those are two screws that hold the panel to the HVAC control assembly. Remove the screws.
• The panel can now be removed. Tip the top of the panel away slightly and lift upwards. The bottom of the panel is attached by two downward pointing hooks (hence the need to lift it almost straight up.
• Once the panel is off the bulb is exposed.

Here's the diagram. Part #61138353797.
