Dual fuel pumps

There are times that I have considered dual fuel pumps.
I figured I'd install a Bimmerworld pump but now I'm guessing it wouldn't fit since the ti gas tank is a different shape from her cousin's.

This is only a problem at the track at 1/2 tank.
I usually just fill up during lunch, but would be nice not to need to remember to get guess at 1/2 tank.

Fiscally it makes more sense to fill up for the 4 times a year this is a problem rather than pay +$300. But it still would be nice not to get fuel starvation.

I had the same problem at NHMS but only at a 1/4 of a tank. Why not just go all out and get a fuel cell?

That's a bit too drastic. :)

Yea I guess the only only other low cost option for our cars would be to create some type of reservoir in between the fuel pump and the rail

I got the same problem with my car.The problem is probably the pumps after 95 that are less effective. A cheap solution is to pick up two used fuel pumps one from a standard e36 before 95 and one from a e36ti and build one for the ti of these two, and after that go with dual pumps. I got friends here that driving with it and itīs flawless. I also got racingfriends that cut the fueltank in half to solvit and at the same time saves weight ;-)

Iīll hope you understand my Swenglish..

Hey guys, I'm looking into doing this on my car. Has anybody done a direct comparison of the different e36 fuel pumps and confirmed that they are really different? They look pretty similar, and the way the pumps mount into the fuel tank looks the same. Is the fuel tank in the Ti different than the sedan tanks in the layout?

If I do this, I will gladly do a full writeup and instructions. Being able to run my car down to almost empty is going to be essential to me getting my car down to the minimum competition weight that I can compete at now. Kind of running out of things to lose weight without getting rid of glass and metal body parts for lighter components.

These are the e36 m3 95 instructions- http://www.pumpkininc.com/content/doc/guide/ag-8.pdf

Just curious to hear if you've had any luck with a fuel starvation fix? Seems to me that using the "Pumpkin design", but substituting Ti pumps would work.... no?
Thanks in advance for any updates!

I know this is way delayed, but all this talk about 318ti vs other e36 fuel pumps being different, etc, well I’m here to set things straight.

1) yes the ti fuel pump is different. Internally they are nearly identical but the body is green for the ti pump while the regular e36 pump is white or blue.

2) physically they are the same size.

3) the ti pump and regular e36 pump do not have a return inlets. The pumps supplied by Bimmerworld have return line spigots. They allow fuel to flow back through the pump body and back into the fuel tank. This is very important for the dual pump setup.

4) the Bimmerworld dual pump kit is plug and play, almost. The physical connectors are different on the ti vs other e36. Each pump has a power and sender connection.
The connectors are generic bmw parts that are easily obtained. You will need to buy two wire plug housings part# 61-13-1-378-401. You will remove and reuse the black plug from the sender on the 318ti pump and use it for the power connector on the regular e36 pump. The kit supplied pig tail connector is used to splice into the power wires for the main pump. Removing the connector housing from the two female pins it holds is easy and self explanatory when you go to do it. Then you use the two new white connectors as the sender connection. Install the pumps per Bimmerworld instruction or better yet, the YT video that shows it. Not hard at all.
