Getting ready for DASC ECU tuning I'm getting all my ducks lined up to get the ECU upgraded to run on larger injectors and 3.0" MAF. The MAF is off an S50 M3: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03110.jpg Injectors adapters are from MM: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03111.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03113.jpg And a 6er airbox: I really don't like cone filters and I want the car to be just as quiet as stock. But I needed a new airbox to fit the 3" MAF so I'm gonna retrofit this one. http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03112.jpg The fitting is pretty good and will require minimal adjustments: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03032.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03033.jpg |
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03035.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03036.jpg The IAT can fit where currently the injectors air shroud is now connected, but I'm probably gonna drill a hole in the airbox just to have better airflow in the intake dutching http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03034.jpg A hump silicon coupling would do the trick perfectly: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...x/DSC03037.jpg In a couple of weeks I should get the ECU tuned and have everything installed... |
Too bad you only flow as good as your smallest restriction...I would remove the traction control unless you use it. It is smaller then your MAF |
Very cool, I was jealously checking out my dad's airbox (E39 530i) yesterday. The six cyls have such a great airbox design. Are you going to get your throttle body bored out? John's got a point about the traction control TB. |
I like the traction control: it keeps me in check going through canyon roads so it's gonna stay. I'm not even sure if the traction control is more so a restriciton than the main TB. Maybe one day I'll get the bored out or I'm gonna go with a single plate TB, we'll see... |
Ok, step 1 (fitting 6er airbox) and step 2 (removing FPR) were completed. The airbox required some modification: I had to add the IAT sensor housing and shorten the resonator... Here's some pics of the new intake with 6er airbox and 3" MAF... http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03164.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03166.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03165.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03168.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03167.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03170.jpg What you think: does it looks stock enough? |
Here's the inside of the airbox: the air pickup is right behind the bumper through a 4" dryer hose: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03163.jpg I cutted and reshaped the IAT sensor housing: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03146.jpg And fitted in the airbox: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03147.jpg I used some epoxy putty to give it a nise finish: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/DSC03155.jpg |
looks totally stock, I love how easy it is to change filters on that style box too |
Agreed, I'd consider doing this just for the convenience of the 6cyl box. Does the 3" MAF use the same connector as the 4cyl MAF? |

Ah...is it possible to use that airbox with the stock M44 MAF? I suppose some kind of adapter would need to be made to go from 3" airbox to a 2.5" (I think...) MAF. |

I would probably use a 3" pipe connected to the airbox and then a 3" to 2.5" reducer from the pipe to the MAF and than a 2.5" coupler from the MAF to the ASC TB... If you go to AutoZOne you'll find it: that's where I got the 3" coupler from the MAF to the ASC TB... |
