Exhaust question after m50 swap :confused:Right, ive just done my m50 swap and i was wondering how you guys with swaps have hung your center sections. Im using the 325 centre section with the cats. Obviously its bolted to the manifolds (headers), im using the bracket that bolts to the gearbox. What i was wondering is have any of you used the hangers that are just behind the resonators after the cats? I know these are used on the coupes etc. On real oem there are two little brackets that bolt up to the body on the coupes etc and have rubber hangers to go between these and the exhaust. The hanger on the 6cly exhaust is in line with the transmission tunnel support. I was wondering if these brackets for the coupes etc will fit the ti? The part No for the support is the same between a coupe and a compact. Any idea anyone? :confused: |
I am using the factory hangers from a 325, 328, M3 in that location. |
for mine, when i tightened all the header bolts, it drew it up right tight to the tunnel and barely budges, then when i put my catback on, I used stiff ruber hangars on the muffler and the exhaust moves around less than it did with the stocker system under there... |
The parts are cheap to hang the exhaust to the stock location behind the resonators. From the headers to the muffler is a long way without any supports. That stress and heat may not be good in the long run. |
im aware of that.. but for now its super tight (alot tighter than before anyways) if it starts giving me any problems, ill definitly have a support welded in... i saved the flat bar that is suppse to go right after the resenators, which was ground off to weld in my Y-pipe. |

im not too concerned about the stress issue as it stands right now... the whole exhaust barely even budges... and its held up pretty tight with the muffler hangars, it even renders the middle hangar located in the middle of my catback useless because its drawn up so tightly... so personally, i don't see how it is any less effective than if there were another hangar right after the cats/resinators. This was done by an exhaust shop too, and he didn't seem to feel there was an immediate need for any extra support at this point in time. We talked about it and decided to save the piece JUST in case. note : i am not using the stock hangars, he had these at his shop off of something he worked on before, and they are NOTHING like the stock rubber donuts, MUCH MUCH stiffer. |
the only reason i would like them fitted is because i have no rear section fitted at the min till i can get one fabbed up so the only support i have is the headers, the gearbox bracket and some crappy bits of wire! Anyone have a pic of theres with these brackets mounted? |

As you know im going to need a custom rear box made for my m50 engined ti. I really don't know what tailpipe to go for! Ive thought about it for days and can't decide. I would ideally like a twin but definately don't want to cut my m sport rear insert as it would look like crap. It has a 4 inch wide gap to fit in. Was thinking oval but im not too sure. The other thing i was thinking was using a 323ti rear insert. As we don't have them here in the UK, i would like to know if this insert has a wider cut out as they have twin pipes as standard. If so could someone tell me the width of the cut out. This way i could have twin pipes. Cheers |
