Exhaust bolts

Does anyone know why the exhaust manifold flange to cat pipe bolts (p/n: 11-62-1-427-586) retail for about $25 each? They just appear to be hardened M10x40 hex bolts. I really don't feel like spending $100+ for four exhaust bolts...

just get different bolts, no need to buy the factory bolts

Because of the super high temperature that they get to... I just replaced mine a few days ago with my head swap. They were impossible to get off. After an hour or so got two off and had to torch the other two (flange was off of car)

I just went to the hardware store and replaced mine when I did my motor swap. No need for stock stuff. I got some good grade bolts so they should stand up to the heat

McMaster Carr, http://www.mcmaster.com/ is your friend for when you need good hardware. I wouldn't trust some of the major hardware store hardware in comparison to stock stuff. However, anything that BMW says is needed for your car, you should be able to get at mcmaster carr, in the appropriate grade, and the price significantly better.

Exhaust bolts are not a critical item, but if you need hardened metric bolts to replace things like seatbelt bolts, or something more important than an exhaust bolt, they should have it.

I have spare bolts and lock nuts for most of the suspension hardware on my car and a few other things that I keep spares of for the track and got all of it for probably a 1/10th of what BMW wanted for the hardware.

Anyone know what the head size is on the factory bolts? I went ahead and ordered some from McMaster Carr, but for the correct size bolt and type, the only head size it came in was 17mm. Sounds a little large for that application- I'm not envisioning there being a whole lot of clearance on the exhaust flange for a socket to fit a 17mm head.
