Looking on Ebay at struts/shocks.

So my right back-end is sagging due to a weak spring I finally figured out. Got out the tape measurer and checked:wink:. So I gotta replace the stock suspension, and I figured, why not upgrade? I came across a shock/strut kit a guy is selling on eBay. I Really need to be conservative due to the fact I'm in high school making $6.50(after taxes)an hour and am about to start pre-engineering college in a couple of months. The guy's approval rating is like 99%, and he says they are new in box. No picture, don't know the guy, and have never dealt with twin tubes. Anybody else using twin tube bilsteins, or can recommend the seller "techdeals1"? I have Monotubes and Eibachs on my Scirocco, but the Ti is going to get some H&R sports, new tires, and hopefully some new bilsteins if this Ebay deal plays out.

Think it's knock off China made stuff, or could it be legit?

it's a little odd that he says they fit a 318ti and a 323ti, since the different engine would mean they need different front shocks to compensate for the weight, not to mention the lack of any pictures

my vote: stay away

Thanks for the Input.

That's 0 for, 1 against.

you dont need different front shocks to compensate for weight, springs perhaps, but not shocks.

hmm.. i would stay away from ebay sellers for big items. unless its been an established company then okay.
there is a vendor on bimmerforums.com that sells them pretty cheap for the bilstein struts and shocks.
doesn't bimmerbum sell a kit?

UberWagen 01-24-2010 04:38 AM

FMD has a point. Springs control most of the ride height. Shocks and struts are really just used to resist compression and dampen load.

Wow, that's not a bad deal at all. That's probably going to be my best bet.

I don't know about that, realoem lists different parts numbers for 318's and non-M 6-cyl. cars, it probably doesn't make as big a difference as the springs but still

Bilstein does not make different front struts for the 318ti and 323ti. The Bilstein struts for a ti are also the same struts for a 328.

But here's the reason I'd hesitate to buy this set on Ebay:

Bilstein makes E36 shocks/struts in two flavors- Sport and HD. They are identical except that Sport is made for use with aftermarket lowering springs, and the HDs are for use with stock OEM (or other non-lowering) springs. The Ebay posting doesn't say which he's selling.

I have HDs on mine- nice, tight ride.

I very much appreciate all of the input. It's more than I thought I would get. It looks like I'm going to go with a kit from BimmerBum. Bilstein Sports and Lowering springs for about $675. I'm gonna wait it out for a little though and just keep checkin' on ebay and bimmerforums, as well as here.

theres a few more sets up from tckline. id check them out to before you buy.
http://www.tcklineracing.com/suspension.htm
and as stated on the tckline page upgrade your rear shock mounts.

UberWagen 01-24-2010 07:29 PM

I like TCKline, I just don't have the bank for it. But I will definitely replace my shock mounts. But I've been looking at more people that bought that kit from Bimmerbum, and they say the springs are just really cheap. So I'm not gonna settle for anything less than:

Koni sports/Bilstein sports with H&R sports.

Let me ask this though. I was looking at BavAuto springs, and a lot of threads on here say they're outsourced to Taiwan. Have they changed manufacturing since then? Because their site says they are rolled in Germany:confused:
