Well after looking at the mild swap idea again.
And talking to ActiveAutowerke in Miami about doing any swap in the Ti.
They said Labor would run 4500$ plus I supply the parts for the swap, figured a M3 swap would cost 12k then with them at the most I think.

I remember seeing seeing a shop in the north(I live in Fla, so GA in north for me) that did S52 swap for 10K or so.....

Well I am going to sell my 00 Civic and the 318ti is paid for......So I guess I could scrap 10k together in year for the swap. and everyone says if I swap to get M3 engine and not bother with the M50 swaps. I just didn't want the hassle of the other changes that need to be done for the M3 swap.

damn I don't know what to do.

BTW, The 318ti is a car I plan to keep around, like my dad kept his 60 TR3 with him.

I remember i was just looking around to get some prices last year on an engine swap... too expensive for me... but here is what a local tuner was suggesting for pricing (www.cgmotorsports.com - CG motorsports in BC, Canada):

Below is a list of options you can choose from, prices include all
necessary parts and labour. Taxes are extra.

-2.0 L 6 cylinder motor conversion (from 320I), 140,000km $5,200 (~3900 USD)
-2.5L 6 cylinder motor conversion (from 95 325I), 95,000 km $7,200. (~5400 USD)
-2.8L 6 cylinder motor conversion (from 97 328I), 140,000km $9,200.(~6900 USD)
-3.2L 6 cylinder motor conversion (from 98 M3), 71,000km $13,500.(~10125 USD)

....These are prices from last year, and as stated above include all the parts and what not... not too bad I guess, although I don't have over 14 grand to spend on that... and if i'm going to do a conversion, why not go fro the m3 engine, and not to cheap out and go for a 325? if you're gonna do it, do it big the first time.

You can look at www.koalamotorsport.com

They do 6 cyl. conversions for the ti. They're prices are for engine and related components only thoughl. Doesn't include tranny, diff...

You could look at spending $8000-$8800 with them for the 3.2 conversion

It's much cheaper and more satisfying if you can perform the swap yourself.

I agree with the other guys that if you are going to do the swap, it seems to make sense to get the best engine you can for the money...all depends on your budget. I think J!m has pointed out before on this board that "speed is just a matter of money...how fast do you want to go?"

If your stock 4-cylinder is pretty low miles (<75K mi) and in good shape, you can get "M3-like" power without the extra expense up front by putting in a supercharger. I paid ~$3000 for the kit from Downing Atlanta, and another $700 for labor to install it on my 75K mi engine. I've had it in for ~10K miles, including a couple of autocrosses and small track days with no problems at all. The stock clutch becomes a weak point with this conversion, so I'll need a clutch soon, but on a car that's been driven hard for 85K miles, that's to be expected.

Just another alternative for those of us who don't want to spend all the bucks for a full conversion up front...

- DASC ~$3700 incl labor
- M3 Clutch 10-15K later at ~$600 incl labor (+$400 for lightweight flywheel if you so desire :) )
- 325/328 brakes ~$800 incl labor when your stock brakes need replacement anyway
- E30 Differential ~$300 plus labor when you get around to it or yours starts to whine under the strain of you newfound power :)

Hey guy, just wnated to ask why did it cost so much to have your DASC installed? Was there some tuning involved? And if so, is it necessary? Thanks dood!

I have thought about the M44S/C making 190whp...

but I want a six.

Koala does it for 8800$ wow that's the best I have seen so far.

I would trust Brett. He doesn't come cheap but he is good and trustworthy. He built my Quiafe. Although I would also trust Mike Robinson in Virginia. I don't have his address handy.

Mike from Schneller Motorsports?

I emailed him

and I can't tell from the email if they replace the rear components for the 8800$ pricetag.

Panzer_M 02-27-2004 07:16 AM

^ as to above.

Prices are for engine and related components only. The prices listed assume retaining your original 4 cylinder transmission, differential, suspension and brakes. Koala Motorsport strongly recommends upgrading the braking and suspension systems to compensate for the extra power

after tonight of pricing a swap...I am looking at the cheaper M44S/C again.

I have Axxis pads/Slotted rotors now, would that be good enough brakes, or would I have to still switch these for something

What ratio diff did you use?
my M44 has 114k miles on it, so I could be in the market for a newer one.
looking at this, a DASC and rebuilt M44 would only be 8k which is equal to the expensive swaps...still with used Sixes..don't know what to do.

Damn I hate the fact I love the TI, and didn't want a Coupe or Sedan(which would have been a 325 or 328-)

J!m 02-27-2004 11:15 PM

I have done the swap, can do the swap, and will do the swap if so desired.

I am located in CT, and should be quite competitive on pricing...

I am not a parts dealer, but have a good list of sources for parts to do the job right (Suspension, brakes etc.)

Let me know if interested.

just got to wait til the Honda is sold to see how much money I get to play with for the BMW first, then it puts a timeframe on the swap ideas.

Panzer_M 02-28-2004 06:06 AM

what would be the pricerange be of a M50B23 swap, suspension and drivetrain swap?
