Tire size question for Style 17 BMW wheels Hi Guys, For a '98 BMW 318ti, what is the widest tire that one can run on the stock (15" x 7") 5 spoke wheels? Given the 7" wide rim, in principle I could put 235/60/15 in the rear and 225/60/15 in the front. But can one expect any rubbing against the fender wells or shocks with this setup? Should I be using a different profile instead? I don't mind using rear wheel spacers. The car has not been lowered and would only be run on the street. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Humberto- |
Hey, not sure about the tires, but if you are interested check out the mid-atlantic forum. We are having a meet next weekend. Welcome to the site! |
?? what are you trying to acheive though with that size tyre ?? on a 7" , you should be on a 215 50 15 // max a 225 45 15. 235 60 15 would look wrong |
Mallard's right, those tires would be too wide for the rim |
Hi tiFreak, Mallard, Why is 235 mm too wide for a 7" rim? According to tirerack, one could put a 235/60/15 tire on rim with width in the range 6.0"-8.0". Refer to the following example for a Pirelli P600 tire: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=0 I really like the light, stock rims and I just want to see if I can install wider tires... Thanks, Humberto- |
235 mm - 65% = side profile height of 141mm high..... Fu*king ballooooons man.. also, with referance to the link provided.. your rim width may be 7" , but your cross section is 9,5" Dont do it, |
Thanks, Mallard...I definitely don't want balloons! :) I will stick with 225/55/15s... Cheers, Humberto- |
You can use this tire size calculator to figure how much the speedo will be off. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html |

Hi Guys, One last question, the 15" stock wheels have a 47 mm offset. Can I put 5 mm spacers on the rear wheels, to better fill the fender well, with a resulting 42mm offset w/o having any rubbing problems. At what offset does the tire/wheel stick out the fender (41mm?) ? I going to go with 225/45/15s, all around (I had a typo in the response yesterday). Thanks again, Humberto- |
there should be no problems with the size or offset with 5mm spacers ;) ¨ |
whats the best tire size to put on 16s and 17s? im thinking 18s are too big in LA lol id blast tires by the week with the way i drive lol |

Dude, if you're going to spend money on wheels, dont get 16s, you'll be so much happier with 17s, and theres still some tire there... |
hmmm good point. i wonder why they made stock 15s. my civic has 16s...stock. is that 225 front and rear? |
Hey Guys, At what wheel offset does the rim stick out of the fender well for a 318ti? (ET38 mm?) Thanks, Humberto- |
