Differential mount bushing
 

Hey guys, just took this picture of my diff mount and bushing.

Would you say that it is shot? I have been having some vibration issues and clunking from the rear end when I left off the accelerator. I'm going to replace it with an MZ3 bushing but just wanted to make sure that this one is toast before I do. It appears to be pulling away from the mount and there seems to be a hole beneath the center bolt hole.

I plan on just pulling off the cover and pressing in a new bushing. I'm going to get a new gasket and all new washers. Anything else I should get?

Hard to say from the pic, but I don't think it looks shot yet.

Really? I realize it's a pretty bad pic so I circled the areas that concern me. I'm pretty sure that it has a metal ring around the outside of the bushing, the fact that it pulled away from the mount seems like a bad thing.:confused:

The hole is normal. It's not a solid bushing. The bending of the metal ring is a little odd and I can't imagine how that would happen.

Mine has a crack in the bushing. I am planning on replacing it as well. Was going to remove the cover like you said and was also going to replace the fluid while I am back there. So maybe you could change your fluid along with the washers and gasket.

Yeah, I am definitely going to have to replace the fluid when I take the cover off.

Cool. What kind of fluid you going for? Redline?? Or maybe some BMW stuff. I haven't looked myself so I am unsure at the moment.

Well I already have a bottle of Royal purple 75w-90 gear oil so I'll probably just stick with that.

Gonna order all the parts tomorrow. I'll post up more pics when I take it off.

Just picked up a new differential cover gasket. It was less than 2 bucks at mileoneparts.com

Nice, I've been buying all my OEM parts from CMUZYY over on bf.c. He has fantastic prices and the parts have been getting to me in less than a week.

So I bought a new/used diff cover from Tony (Bluebimma), got a M Coupe diff bushing and new gaskets and washers. Pressed the old bushing out of Tony's and put in the M bushing.

Here are all the parts I ordered.

07129900047 diff bolt nut

I'm going to swap covers either tomorrow or Sunday, I'll post up pics of the old one when I get it out.

Here are some shots of the "new" cover. The bushing is wet because I had it in the freezer before pressing it in, made it a whole lot easier.

Please let me know what improvements you experience from this new bushing. Mine has a crack in it and I have been thinking of replacing it as well.

taking out that bushing is a B***H! a real B***H!

I took of my cover & had a local shop replace the bushing - using a 2000 lb. press - & I'm told they had a hard time swapping it.

unless it is obviously broken in half or torn up - dont bother.
but if you are doing it - make sure they orient it the right way, or it'll F-up your day good & proper... :)

oh, yeah - use 75w-90 Royal Purple Gear Oil - that stuff rocks!

I already took the bushing out and pressed in a new one.

To get it out I pushed out the center of the old one, cut away as much of the rubber as possible then took it to the bridgeport and ground away as much of the metal ring as possible without hitting aluminum. I did this in two places on opposite sides of the ring.

There was enough of a lip on the bushing's metal ring to stick it in a vice and push it together. (It compressed where I ground the metal away.) I then took it to the press and used a small piece of scrap metal to push the ring out.

The new one went in really easily, much easier than the CABs, I just stuck the new bushing in the freezer and it popped right in with barely any pressure from the press.

And yeah, I'm using the 75w-90 RP gear oil. (Edit - I now prefer Mobil 1 or Amsoil 75-90 for open diff, 75-110 for lsd)
