General Transmission Questions (Gtrag vs ZF)

Hello guys...
I would like to know which of the two trannys is geared lower, the ZF or the Gtrag... Meaning that if you left your rear end the same which tranny would run at lower RPM's?

Next question is about drive shafts and Flywheels...
If you get a ZF do you need the driveshaft that corresponds to it or can you run a Ti drive shaft, also if it is a ZF does it have to run the flywheel from the 6 or does it have to run our 4 cyl one?

Just trying to figure out what would be best for my Auto to Manual swap...

Thanks in advanced guys!:biggrin: Any and All information is greatly appreciated.

These are the gear ratios I have for the ZF and getrag. They are pretty much the same. Definitely needs an overdrive. Check out the getrag 260 if you want lower gearing, there is a thread on bimmerforums about what you have to do to swap it to an E36.

ZF Transmission
4.20
2.49
1.66
1.24
1.00

Getrag 250 Transmission
4.23
2.52
1.66
1.22
1.00

I am swapping a ZF Into my S52 TI to replace the Getrag (Larger clutch surface and larger guibo) Do I need the front half of the driveshaft from a 6cyl E36 to use with the back half of my TI stock driveshaft due to length differences between trannys?

Additionally, does the shifter rod length change? Thanks!

I have the getrag bolted up to my M52, I kept the stock ti driveshaft but I think it's really pushing it, there isn't much more room to compress it. With a ZF you'll definitely need the front half of a 328/M3 driveshaft and balance it with the ti rear half.

I think if you have a 198mm selector rod already that it should work with the ZF. UUC/AKG list the same selector rod for late 325i and 328i/M3.

Thanks Dave. On my way to the yards to source the front half of a driveshaft. My UUC rod went it yesterday and renewed all bushings. No sloppiness now. Smooth with the right shift point notch.

General Transmission Questions (Gtrag vs ZF)

Oops, the two I had in storage were for 2.5L E36 non-ZF manual trannys.

None here locally. Anywhere... yards, dismantlers, reman or new. I ended up sourcing one from L.A. To install on Thursday.

Just a follow up. I did source a front driveshaft from L.A. And got it all installed last week. It performed well on the track and I feel more assured with the larger flex disc.
