Forum life Oh how I wish people still chose to use the forums to hang out in, instead of Facebook groups. I met loads of people in the old m3forums and by the time I started posting here most people already transitioned away from the forums. Glad this is still around even though not many come here anymore. |
Agree. I feel like in the last 8 years there has been a steep decline in forums. I can understand this one as the vehicle ages, but I've watched it happen on other woodworking and vehicle forums as well. |
100% agree with your sentiment here. Hobby related FB groups are extremely toxic (and especially car ones) and are mostly full of people asking the same questions repeatedly and getting responses from people who are wrong, or people posting something for sale with people commenting (complaining) on the price. Forums (like this one) are a great resource, I can't count the amount of threads I've used that detail major repairs or googled the problem I had and found the answer straight away. I got into VWvortex around 2012 when it was still kinda strong. On the mk4 board, there were people who had kept updating the same car/build thread for over 10years! |
Agreed FB/IG etc are super subpar. I don't have too much to add here often but try to keep it active. Other E36 is getting built on BFC which is decent. I've noticed though newer model forums are active. |
I agree with you all FB & others are suboptimal. There is a wealth of information in here and what alternatives exist just don't cut it for me. I hope there are at least of few of us enthusiasts who keep them on the road, see them 10-20 years in the future still running. Sometimes I wonder if that will be possible with the way things are going in the car world, but I'm still pretty sure you'd have to force me away from keeping it going. |
Maybe true but the forum is way cooler. Sort of like vinyl- we who get in on the ground floor will be the envy of those “new comers” when they realize socialist media sucks. |

This thread gave me goose bumps. :) Every time I decide to close the door, someone reminds me how useful it is. I had a buyer for the forum but they backed out. Guess I said yes to quickly. :) I heard on NPR that even cassettes are making a come back. |
I have five home cassette decks currently, and two portable ones. I even have that ancient black vinyl disc technology fully active. Just inventoried over 800 CDs in my collection. Social media is okay for some things; but it is not a replacement for the forums. |
I was going to share a FB post of the ti FB group then realized, I left it months ago. :) |
I still come here for reference for certain repairs. It is a shame though...social media took over as more "social". |
It is more social. It’s fine for casual stuff. But it’s trying to be a forum, which it can’t be. Try searching old data on a social media site… Here we have organization (mostly) and even decade old posts are relevant today. |

I check this forum daily. 4 Tis, and this is the best place for people that love that quirky car! |
