So I replaced my Timing Chain Tensioner.

I just hit 330,000 miles today, and for the past 10k or so, my motor had such a bad rattling sound...it was so embarrassing! I just thought the thing was about to blow.

I did a little research on here, and saw that others had the same thing and replaced their timing chain tensioner, I found a used one on eBay for $7, so I figured it doesnt hurt to try.

Then I read that it has to be compressed to install it (i.e. new)...well, whatever...I did it anyway. It seriously only took 5-10 minutes! I popped the old one out, and put the new one in, I just had to push it in by hand and start screwing the plug/cap in. Once it was started, I just tightened it down...started the car and let it run for about 2 minutes, drove it around the block, and it is soooooooo much quieter now!

DO NOT RUN USED TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS, THAT IS BAD NEWS!!!!!!

They are CHEAP, replace it with a new one, if it fully fails you WILL lose your motor.

They are cheap... the one I had in there was used...I mean, if this one starts making noise, then I'll buy a new one.

My car has 330,000 miles on it, I dont think its going to last much longer.

your car, not mine bud. have fun :)

I think you'd have to try pretty hard to find a timing chain tensioner in worse shape than one with 330k miles on it ;)

Exactly my point! If it gives me another 20k miles, then GREAT!

hi, i want to replace my timing chain tensioner. Mine is an m44. Is it okay to install it uncompressed? I'm not comfortable doing it compressed.

Most instructions are for m42. I'm wondering if anyone here has done the same for an m44. thanks!
