Whistling noise

So Im driving and I get a whisking noise somewhere in the back hatch area. Anyone know of problem areas?

teetime4one 04-11-2013 04:36 PM

Sounds crazy...but, check the jack pads to ensure they are there.

SpeedDemon 04-11-2013 06:04 PM

You talking about the Jack pads for lift points? It the pads that hold the Jack in place in the hatch

teetime4one 04-11-2013 08:59 PM

The jack pads for the lift points.

Has anyone determined if the missing jackpads contribute to headliner failure? I recall this was a suspect area for E39s.

Is a back window partially open?

Never heard of this one Rich. I am missing the rear jack pads on my car. No noise or sagging headliner. lol
I mention the jack pads possibly making the whistling noise do to seeing a few posts from Steven mentioning it. I usually have the radio up loud enough to void out any noises my car might make. lol

Ya, on the E39s, lore has it that if the jackpads are missing, air pressure coming into the jack hole  and up the B pillar over time causes the headliner to start working it's way loose. It's one of the first things I check when I pick up an older BMW. my 95's headliner was already giving way, so I couldn't check the effect on the E36 ti. My 97 headliner is intact, so I wasn't going to experiment there...

At certain speeds I get a whistling noise from my passenger side mirror. I guess the air passes over a spot just right to annoy me. Still havent fond the exact location and its just the passenger side.

Well my headliner needs to be fixed so this might be true.

I have the same torn seal issue on both of my ti's and don't have a whistle there. I am interested though if anyone has repaired this particular seal as I'll need to do it on both cars.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack this post...
