Transmission issues Clutch went bye-bye on my 318ti... been trying to replace it, but I'm having some serious issues with trying to pull the driveshaft. I am having the hardest time trying to break the bolts loose on the driveshaft mounts. Need rto get this done asap and can't afford a mechanics help... any suggestions? |
Lock bolt or nut that faces transmission side with a box wrench or vise-grip. Rotate driveshaft until wrench or vise-grip touches underbody and locks the nut/bolt that faces transmission. Next only use a wrench or socket on the other end of the bolt/nut you locked. I like to stack wrenches so I have better leverage, on a socket use a 1/2" drive or make a extender bar 1' long and put that over the socket ratchet so you have a much better leverage point to get the bolts loose. It takes a lot of torque to break these bolts loose so crank on them |
Thanks xxxJohnBoyxxx... I will give it my best shot. I'll tell you what... these effin' bolts are as hard as crap to break free. I got this car on jack stands in my driveway so I don't have a lot of room to work, but I guess that is the life of a shadetree mechanic, right? Again... Thanks, man. Appreciate the advice. |
You also need a friend. Have them lay on the opposite side of the car and help you get everything lined up, it because trivial to do while you have someone make sure the wrenches stay locked In place. |
Hey, thanks for the advice. I actually had my friend come over and do just that. Once he got here, i had the trans out, new clutch in place and back together in 1 hour. Everything fell into place 123. Again, thanks for the advice. Big help. |

Now I want to faster gearbox for this thing. These aren't the fastest beemers, but they sure do look cool when they have all the details right and some nice shoes (RIMS AND RUBBER). So, I'll be looking into that soon. Maybe next month I will put some feelers out for a gear change-up. |
Unfortunately. There is not an easy (read direct bolt in) rear end to upgrade to for the Ti. So you will need to look into the e30 rear end. Your current rear end should be 3.45 and I believe the e30 had an lsd in 3.7x... I might be mistaken though. |
I understand that to be the case, but I'm talking about a whole new drive line from the tranny back to the rear end. I'd like to know if any of the 325 stuff can bolt in to this car... That would be interesting, right? |
It would be a waste. :P the getrag in your 318ti is exactly the same as the one in all 91-04 323i/325i, the zf transmission in the 328i/m3 is stronger, but has the same ratios, and will not make you faster. A 6 speed is another option but is quite cost prohibited because of how new they areand will require a custom driveshaft. However, if you want to do it, more power to you!! It will not make you faster though. However, the e30 diff will be relatively cheap, and make the car noticeably faster. |
