Long Distance on a Tow Dolly

I'm about to move from Massachusetts to Las Vegas and am suddenly planning on taking my 318ti. I had ordered a tow dolly for another, front wheel drive vehicle, but now plan on towing the BMW.

There seems to be a lot of debate online as to whether I can simply put it in neutral or if I need to disconnect the drive shaft. The latter seems more difficult than on some cars, so if I need to, I might either 1. get a trailer 2. see if I can sell the car rather quickly.

Anyone any experience with the 318ti on a tow dolly?

Thanks! This forum has been a wealth of info since buying the car.

Looking at my owner's manual, it would seem to be fine to just tow it in neutral. They suggest that you only tow an auto 30 miles, but give no distance for the manual.

Internet seems split 50/50 on dolly a rwd manual car. Depending on the angle you should be ok. If you really want to be safe, just drop the DS.

Thanks. I may drop the drive shaft if I get time. It just seemed a bit more effort on this car than some others and I'm going to be a bit pressed as moving day approaches.

I'd drop the driveshaft. Or get all the wheel's off the ground.

I towed a '79 cj7, rwd/manual car as you're describing 1k miles without disconnecting and it tore something up. I don't remember what broke.

Just back it on and lock the steering wheels pointed straight. Assuming the front wheel bearings are good.
