JohnBoy's Turbo Build

I'm getting ready to start my turbo build and ordered a couple thousand in parts today. I only need $625 in odds and ends to compete my kit. I went pretty wild and will start posting specs and pictures as parts start arriving. I plan to pull the motor in mid July to remove the oil pan and mount everything. Should have all the bugs worked out by the end of July.

Just a little taste:tongue:

Turbo Specifications:

MAX Up To 500HP. Inlet: 4 Inch. Outlet: 2.5 Inch.
Oil Line:1/8 NPT

Oh no... not a turbo! :( What happens to your DASC now? Want to sell me your 3.0" pulley and water/meth injection kit real cheap??

tiFreak 06-16-2009 09:27 PM

this is going to be sick, looking forward to seeing what you can do, maybe you can start making kits? ;)

DASC is still perfect. Don't want to sell pulley but I can tell you where to buy one. Might sell the DASC in August if the turbo goes well.

***Update***

Purchased everything I can think of except a turbo timer and I'm still looking for a turbo blanket that covers the turbo to keep the heat inside it. All parts will be here over the next 7 days. All parts purchased for normal running adjustable 15-25psi of boost with peak boost of 30psi for maybe a few runs to see what heppens:biggrin:

This is going to be fun...

If it all works out good I will send you a parts list and you can start making the kits.

hey johhny, might be interested in the dasc when you put it up, are you gonna sell the whole thing or use some of the kit?

I will sell the whole kit and maybe more. Might sell TT Stage 3 DME with matching EWS II and key, the upgraded injectors and pulleys 3.4", 3.2" & 2.8". All that's needed is a 1995 M3 MAF sensor to complete the ultimate DASC:eek:

minicoop900 06-17-2009 03:45 AM

ahh well mines a m44 so the tt stage 3 stuff wouldnt do me much good, but we have another ti with a dasc down here so we may be interested in the pulleys also, just gimme a heads up when you sell it and ill see if we want it

Jean H.318TI 06-17-2009 05:00 AM

sickkkk, how much in parts?

Stage 3 is only for M44's.

The stage 3 is for a M44. It upgrades the maps so you can run bigger injecters which I would include, Smaller pulleys for more boost which I include. It all stuff I ran on my stock M44 for around 33,000 miles before I traded that block it in as a core with 173,000 miles on it. Car ran in the high 13's with the stock 318 and this DASC kit and 3.2" pulley...

$1,555.98 today. Around $1,000 over the past 3 months on parts here and there. I think I have everything I need so maybe just buy oil and filter and install everything is all I have left.

I'm excited!!

This turbo is similar to a GT35R with a exhaust A/R .63 for faster spool

I purchased cheep so I could try a few different turbos and when I find the best size, I will purchase that size in the expensive Garrett BB turbo at $1,200~$1,500.

ohhh ok cool, well mines a auto, but the other ti customer we have is manual so if we do go for it, ill probably end up going stock dasc and well build his car with all of that stuff

What are you going to do for tuning? Standalone?

Not right yet...Currently running Motronic 5.2 with Lucas 42.8# blue strip, M3 3" MAF. Snow methanol injection. Tuning is not a problem. Might go stand alone for on the fly adjustability:wink:

Jean H.318TI 06-18-2009 01:49 AM

if ur tuning works fine im gonna go turbo too yeahhh i love turbo sounds

Stand-Alone

***Stand-Alone***

Well I've decided I'm going to need a stand-alone to tune this correctly. It's going to be a TEC-GT or a MegaSquirt integrated onto the Motronic M5.2 DME. Both have good and bad.

TEC-GT ~ Good: better tuning, user friendly and it's a TEC. Bad: price way more then I want to spend, not plug and play for M44, A/C control?, OEM Gauges?, OEM sensors? Does not retain any OEM functions.

MegaSquirt/integrated M5.2 ~ Bad: Harder to tune, not as many options as the TEC. Heard not reliable for long drives, burns out parts. Good: Cheep price, Plug and Play, uses all BMW sensors, all gauges work, A/C controls normal, CEL works, DISA works, retains most OEM functions but adds unlimited DIY tuning (just what I need)

I think I'm going MegaSquirt with ignition drivers if I'm able to graft one into the stock DME:eek:

So is the MegaSquirt reliable?

I heard from a reliable source he helped tune a car and on a 1,500 mile trip and it left the owner stuck 500 miles away from home. Today I looked around on the web at articles and posts and found people recomending MS increase the watts on certain parts on the unit since they were buring out. The home page and instructions say say several times: MegaSquirt teaches you how to tune (Cool ) and you will learn how to diagnose and repair failures (un-cool ).

Am I just paranoid and all that was growing pains from years ago that have all been worked out?

Is the "Squirt" good enough for lots of daily driving?

I have to have reliablity & like the tec3 but think $3K is just plain stupid

Danny318 06-19-2009 07:38 AM

From everything I have read, there are no issues with parts 'burning out'.

Lots of people have run the 6cyl bmw's with MS without issue.

I have not run it yet, I just have everything sitting around waiting for me to get some free time.

marko 06-19-2009 11:54 AM

John... I lurk on whoretex often & a lot of those boys go megasquirt way.
Not sure if all I hear is good.

Just type 'megasquirt' and some stuff will pop up... but if you go to individual model forums I'm sure you can get more.

***Injector Upgrade 60#***

Getting ready to order injectors for fuel delivery. Mertric recomends Sieman Deka 60lbs. Also this afternoon they are going to recomend a sequential stand-alone that is custom built for my application at a fair price.

Install target date is still first week of July:tongue:

Should have Turbo & Waste Gate today or tomorrow

Danny318 06-20-2009 07:30 AM

who makes this sequential standalone ????

Still waiting to hear who makes it. Metric is the ones who told me about it. It would only be good for economy since I think they all god to sequential batch fire after 3,000 anyways

Jean H.318TI 06-23-2009 03:05 AM

can't wait to see this baby running. GL with everything

xxxJohnBoyxxx 06-23-2009 03:07 AM

Been sicker then a dog since Friday afternoon.

I've got all Turbo parts in except the OBX manifold, turbo blanket and fuel/timing control.

Trying to get my brother in law to drive me to the track this Wednesday so he can make a few passes  before I start tearing it down for the turbo. If there is no rain I will film video. Should put down some good numbers with a decent tune on it now. Still a little fat but acceptable
at 10.7-11.3. Timing will stay at 12 degrees total advance above 3,500. Never did get a final tune completed so I will run what was the best tune I had to date...

I had my DMV hearing last week and I find out this Thursday if I get my license back 100% or loose if for 4 more months:frown:
