Defined upgrades by fixed naming. Steve J!m, myself and my girlfriend were brainstorming over a couple of beers at The Black Forrest Brewhaus last Saturday night. Here is a suggestion that would improve the ability for members to determine what changes we have made, and at the same time clear up the bloated signature blocks. If categories were made such as the ones we already have, but with pre-defined brand and parts, we could choose from a list to define what upgrades we have. For example: I have a Reiger rear spoiler. I would use the drop down list to choose Exterior/Body Kit/Reiger/Rear Spoiler. That way no one can be ambiguous about naming their upgrades. It would allow members to search for specific upgrades, and see who has them. It would also clear up "Garage" tab that restricts typing in upgrades. We need standards, so we are all on the same page. Here are more items, and how I would choose them from drop down windows: Transmission/Shifter/Z3M Suspension/Shocks-Struts/Bilstein/Sport Interior/Seats/Vader-Heated Exhaust/Stromung Intake/Carbonio. Differential/6cylinder/3.45/Limited Slip Interior/Armrest/OEM Users can request new items be added to list, but otherwise must choose from the list. Those members that have, for example M-tech model cars, can list that they have the M-tech rear bumper, even though it came stock. It would still help other's with possible questions. Interior colors and OEM options direct from the dealer can be added too, such as side impact airbags. I hope this is possible, it sure would be helpful. Eric |
sswweettt a standardized parts list? brilliant! |
That sounds like a good idea L8. See if it wasn't for beer you guys would've never thought of it. |
Maybe after I have a few beers :drunk: first. I love to add things to the site, but that seems like WORK. Let me look into a couple mods that is out there. |
I think it's just a matter of adding a Microsoft Acess database into the website. Then queries can be made once everyone loads their info. Quote:

That's not the problem. I can create additional profile fields with dropdown menus and put them where ever I like. Where would you propose these list be. You know, I bet I can make them a signature. |
NEVER use non-standard pieces to build a website! especially anything M$. they can't comply with STANDARDS to save their lives. freakin' xml would be better. |
I'm only a computer geek by hobby. I'll leave it to a professional computer geek to figure it out. Quote:

It's not a question of how, it's more where. I can eliminate sigs and probably create a custom sig in a specific format. I'll try yo do it over the weekend. |
Better have another beer and really think this over. I'll help by having a few tonight as well. If this is a topic over beers, we all need help. |
Think of this as more than just a signature. A database can have records consisting of text, video, images and sound. Member upgrades can have images attached to the text. A Stromung upgrade could have a sound file attached Between all the members, we have so many pictures and videos that need to be properly cataloged. Each upgrade can also have a link to the "Notebook" section. Quote:

Seems like a good idea, but that is going to he a HUGE list. And what about the people that have custom parts? Not trying to shoot you down, just adding to the discussion. |
You start with the mods that most often are done. Custom stuff would be the last thing to worry about. Quote:

Stick with mods that you buy from a retail business and install. Quote:

Why? Not all of us can afford $400 exhaust that do the same thing as the $100 setup a muffler shop will build me |
Hey Steve if you need some help let me know, I have some PHP programing experience. I am assuming by your statement that you are using MySQL. Prolly just need to add some fields into the user profile (I am not sure how you have it set up). If you want I can do some more brainstorming on how to implement this. Let me know. |

I just need to see an example of how it should look. Then what do I do, disable sigs for this new one? Or just expand the garage pull down? |
I think modification of the garage pull-down makes the most sense. Maybe throwing rocks at a hornet's nest here, but for those fortunate enough to have multiple tis, the ability to add additional cars to the garage as well, with their own list of mods... I personally have too many mods (well, better described as 'deviations from delivered condition' as the "mods" are predominantly BMW parts) to fit in the garage at the moment... I had asked you (Steve) about expanding the garage previously, (which may, or may not have been done- I honestly have not been back to it since it was introduced) but I like this new idea better anyway. |

Well, perhaps it will become moot now? |
This suggestion must be thought of as 3 pieces;input data, architecture and output. The signature is only the output. What must first be considered is what specific named upgrades will be listed, then the method that members input their info, then the place it will be visible to view. There are already people throwing out comments about unique modifications and custom mods. Let's keep things in perspective: 1. 99.9% of us only have one 318ti 2. 99% do not have 6 cyliner engines 3. 80-90% of mods are done with factory parts or purchased upgrade parts. There is always time to add the custom neon air freshner mod to the list AFTER the more common and useful mod data is listed. This ME attitude gets annoying. If you can't afford to do any mods that cost money, then sit back and learn. I have minor things I have done to my car, but I do not need to make a modification record on it, unless it's something alot of people have or plan to do. And that would be on request; not demanded. The signature can have the defined mods as hypetext links that jump to another page. This page could list, pics, video, sound, cost of parts, places to buy and a full write up. What's important is to create the mechanism inwhich to input the info. Steve can create the heirarchy of mods, based on the same already broken down forum sections I.E. CAI, Transmission, Suspension etc. Everyone please stop the ME attitude and let's just get something going. Improvement is always ongoing. Quote:

Hey Steve, are you using PHPBB or vBuliten? |

This is not a question on how to do it. It is just a matter of creating additional profile fields and placing them where I want them. I'll whip up something this weekend. |
