Right, it's been running the way it is now since I bought it in 2004. It runs fine, to the point that I never knew anything was wrong until I was told that the check engine light had been removed....

The M42 is the 1.8L inline 4 that ran from 1989 until part way into 1996. The M44 is a 1.9L that replaced it in the 318 models as well as the 1.9L Z3.

More bad news, the dealership got back to me...

More bad news, the dealership got back to me about the sensor...there's no mechanical way to make the camshaft position sensor for an M42 engine work with an M44 DME according to the engineering...
