10k on synthetic fluid is perfectly acceptable. I've been changing my fluid every 10k miles with a filter change every 5k, had my oil tested and everything was hunky dory.

As for changing out the diff, the cheapest way is to get one out of an E30 (previous generation 3 series) in the ratio of your choice.
