Ok I got it in. I just had to pull out the output shaft and rotate it slightly and try again. With a little finesse with a hammer I got it to go the rest of the way in and everything fit correctly...

Have an M44 engine with 150k miles. Runs great and doesn't leak any fluids. The car was an automatic so you know it hasn't been overreved. I pulled it to repaint the car and to put an S52 engine...
