received the new switch from autohaus arizona today (PN 61 31 1 378 207) and installed it. EDIT: according to pelican parts, 61-31-1-378-207 was superceded by 61-31-8-360-420 so this should work as well and i believe was the actual part number i searched on and ordered from autohaus arizona.

HERE'S THE KEY TO REMOVING IT AND INSTALLING IT EASILY!

the red plastic piece that surrounds the plunger must be pulled out as far as possible (which means you need to put pressure on the brake pedal so the white plunger can extend to its limit). this allows the tabs to be pushed inward (for it to slip out to remove the old one and in to install the new one).

the new one is a bit smaller than the original (in the body), but the connector and where it mounts into the metal bracket are proper.

brake lights now work, but i've yet to go for a drive and test to make sure cruise de-activates when tapping the brake, but i expect it to work now.
