Yeah, Europe has always been 100%-200% more for 'petrol' then here in the states. Plus you have very high automobile registration fees based on the displacement of engines. Because of all this very high expense you have a lot more options to purchase much more fuel efficient autos as well as publics transportation choices that don't exist here, especially in southern California.

Since gasoline is 'so cheap' here, it is wasted by a whole lot of people driving hugh SUVs and pickups with one person (the driver) in them going back and forth to their office/desk jobs.
