Ok, just got off the phone with the guy (company) who has the engine.. It's a 3.2L / 6cyl out of a '98 Z3. He didn't have the s52 or m52 designation, but did give me the VIN - WBSCK9338WLC85907. He said it does come with the wiring harness still attached which is good news.
HOWEVER - He did say it will not fit my stock '96 318 transmission because the 3.2L motors only came with manual transmissions and my car is an automatic. He said I could modify my car to accept a manual trans, but of course that's more $$$$.
