Ambient temperature will also affect how these struts work- on a cold day, they are more likely to not work properly because the gas pressure inside has dropped. However, when the weather is warmer and the temperature, and therefore gas pressure, increases, they may work well enough to hold the hatch open. I assume that this is what you are experiencing.
From a safety standpoint, I would still replace them ASAP.
