I haven't tackled this yet, but preparing too when I get done with machine shop.
From my research, the cable is going to only reach to a certain area. Check RealOEM diagrams around there. There's a lot hidden under the intake.
Pawinning and M3NACE on YouTube have some really good E36 How-To videos you may find helpful.
Don't forget things you may have deleted (SAP, ESC, A/C) they'll be part of your harness, but obviously you won't have a place to plug them into.
