Let me elaborate. The shifter will be off center, if you don't make adjustments. Since the instructions say to bend the selector rod and the shifter, why not accomplish both by bending only the selector rod. Bending the shifter isn't easy, bending the selector rod is.
Put in the shifter as is, put in the selector rod as is. See where the selector rod hits the damping ring of the drive shaft, make a bend. Then see if it sits center. If not, bend the SELECTOR ROD to get the shifter centered.
