Sounds like you have a charging issue. The whirling sound was your starter spinning and not engaging which is normal from a low battery. Charge the battery fully then try to start the car. If it starts put a volt meter on the battery and you should see 13.5+ volts to ensure your charging system is working.

You might have to check your ground cables to the engine since they will cause charging issues like this or a bad alternator
