The rear of the 318ti is already independent, just a less sophisticated version than other E36 cars. I don't think BMW has used a solid rear axle since the early 1960s or late 1950s.
You cannot swap in an E36 M3 rear suspenison. The two rear suspension set-ups are massively different.
