Actually, the problem is that the spindles are different even though the bearings are exactly the same. On the M3 spindles, the two caliper pick-up points are more inward by about 7mm (less than 1/4"). Also, the radius on which the mounting holes are located on radius 2mm bigger for the regular e36.

And yes, M3 spindles must be used.

Bearings are the same across this line up of cars.
