Those green bars are pretty useless imo. They're calculated on a certain formula that measures how far you've traveled and on what engine temp you traveled on. When it reaches yellow it's time for service (which usually includes an oil change or a recommended inspection).

What I have done (I've owned my car for about 2 months) is, an oil change after seafoaming the engine (Mobil 1 0W-40) and I took the car to the BMW dealership for a "Safety Inspection". That was about $117 and they did a complimentary Oil Light reset (yay?). Anyways, I think the intervals on the oil light are too far apart, and I plan on doing an oil change every 5K miles or time permitting.
