There is nothing strange in what you are finding. You gotta remember that the 318ti has the e30 rear end, the rear shocks and springs are usually shorter than the regular e36 rear suspension. Especially shocks, you can get away with e36 rear springs - aftermarket etc, but the rear shocks are too long. If you are looking for rear springs look at z3 springs - same rear end as 318ti - or even just e30 rear end suspension components. The z3 springs could be too short and soft for your purpose though. Well the H&R ones will be for sure, maybe stock height ones will be better.
