As someone who owns both a Z3 M Roadster and an M52-swapped 318ti, I recommend you seriously consider swapping the six into the 318ti, especially if the Z3 has a salvage title. Power is addictive, and you can part out the carcass to recoup your funds. If possible, try to drive a swapped 318ti completed by club member local to you (quite a few people have driven my rat-rod). Truth be told, my M52-powered 318ti is on par with my M Roadster in terms of power and civility. That said, two years after I completed the M44 to M52 swap, I'm now swapping an S52 into my 318ti... with plans to hot-rod it even more.
