You were correct in mixing the antifreeze with distilled water 50/50. Technically, water is a better coolant by itself but it needs the antifreeze for the cold weather driving. To bleed the system correctly you have to open the bleed screw and rad cap while the engine is running so it is going to get warm. You just don't want to open either the screw or cap after the engine has gotten all the way to operating temperature. Let it cool down a bit before opening the system so the pressure drops. That way you won't get a face full of boiling coolant.
