Cheers for the reply, I finally found out that it was just the switch. The wiring digaram is really hard to read and because there is two switches that move at once I found it really hard to test it. It seems pin 1 <-> 5 and pin 7 <-> 8 need to be connected for the washer to work. The block is situated at the opposite end of the stalk (just added that incase anyone needs that info for future reference!).
