it is also the DME that seems to give people the most trouble trying to get it tuned properly.

I'm able to move stock chips in and out of my 282 DME along with properly done aftermarket chips without worrying about EWS issues. I can also swap two different 282 DMEs in my car, and have no startup issues.

Still haven't had any one confirm if the dinan and turner chips for the 282 remove EWS, but they are not advertised as doing such and those can also be installed without worrying about EWS issues. Pretty sure the key has the match the EWS unit in these cars, and the DME doesn't really matter as long as it is a 282. No experience with swapping back to an earlier DME.
How I understand it: The 282 can have a EWS delete chip put in it or you can do the 1 wire cut and put any DME in a EWS-I car. 1996+ is the year you will need a EWS simulator or it won't start unless everything matches and is alligned. I know EWS-II very well so I think you can run any of your DME's with a chip or 1-wire cut to disable EWS. Only my thoughts
