I think the auto is actually rated to handle more torque. The manual is a Getrag S5D 250G and the auto is a GM A4S 270(310)R. I believe the 3 digit number is the torque rating for the trasmission. So the manual is rated for 250NM, and the auto is rated for either 270NM (9/95+) or 310NM (before 9/95).

The limiting factor for the manual transmission is not only the transmission limit of 250NM, but the diameter of the clutch disc. The 318 cars have a 215mm clutch, the 6 cylinder cars have 228mm clutches, and the M3's have 240mm clutches. I think it's possible to bolt up an M3 flywheel and clutch to the 318 motors though to handle the extra power. Someone on here can confirm that though. Also, an 328/M3 "beefed up" manual transmission can be fitted to the 318 cars to handle any extra power.
