I agree with wolferj, if the check engine light is on you need to check what the ecu is saying and start there. I would suspect there is a vacum leak however in the intake. There's a bunch of hoses under the upper intake you might want to take a look at. As for wraping the spark plugs in teflon tape, in all my years I've never heard of doing this. It sounds like a bad idea. Remember the outer metal of the spark plug that threads into the block also is the ground for the plug, teflon I don't believe conducts electrisity so thus you may be causing some of the problem by wraping them in the teflon. I don't know how hot teflon can get either.
