Just get out there and do it, no need to have a car finished right away so with some careful planning you can avoid having to do things twice. We're working on a build for a friend right now and the goal is to have the car competition ready for under $10k. He's going to be using a 325 engine.
We built and refreshed a 325 for chump and I think were just over $6k to get it done (including rims, new rubber, new control arms, and complete refresh on the braking system) though we did scrounge some parts from other race cars just collecting dust in the shop.
