I mention the jack pads possibly making the whistling noise do to seeing a few posts from Steven mentioning it. I usually have the radio up loud enough to void out any noises my car might make. lol
Ya, on the E39s, lore has it that if the jackpads are missing, air pressure coming into the jack hole and up the B pillar over time causes the headliner to start working it's way loose. It's one of the first things I check when I pick up an older BMW. my 95's headliner was already giving way, so I couldn't check the effect on the E36 ti. My 97 headliner is intact, so I wasn't going to experiment there...
