Default Shifter knob: loose & wobbly

1998 318ti. 5-speed. Original owner.

About two years ago, shifting into reverse, the shifter knob just "POP!" came off in my hand. After staring at it silently for a minute, I just stuck it back on the post and it kinda "clicked" into place. Since then, it's become incrementally loosy-goosey and wobbly. Now it just slips on and off easily. Not good.

I'm gonna get a new one, but what's the deal up in that knob? Will the new one just CLICK into place? The post doesn't have any sort of notches or flares. Who has experience with these things?

Thanks. Here's pictures.

You push it on.
I'd suggest a rubber mallet.

I believe if you force them by spinning them, it messes up the tabs inside. I have a couple of 5 spd knobs laying around if you are interested.

Yeah, OK. Are they new? Black? Leather, etc? Exact same as mine that popped off?

Just about all of the BMW knobs attach the same way. Below is a link to the knobs I carry.

I wrapped some electrical tape around the metal shaft, through the cut out. It took most of the slack
