Default M50 swap

I am going to buy the engine and engine electronics pretty soon. I found a very good 1992 non-VANOS engine. Is there a big differece betwin VANOS and non-VANOS engines. I ask this because the non-VANOS one that I have found is in preatty good shape (italien doctors car as about 130.000 km) and I can get it really cheap.
Any other tips and things to look out for are really welcomed.

Thanks!!

What year is the car it will be going into?

If the engine is much older than the car, (as I fear it may be) there could be compatibility issues...

1994. They are boulth OBD I cars so I think that this won't be an issue. The engine is a pre VANOS engine and build date is 9/1991.

No problems with non-Vanos in an OBDI car. Get EVERYTHING you can- wiring harness, accessories, radiator, MAF, airbox, PS lines, A/C lines, brackets, etc. I will never do another engine swap without a whole parts car. The Vanos and non-Vanos engines are very, very similar. Supposedly, the non-Vanos engine is the engine of choice for FI, and the Vanos is the choice for people that want to upgrade cams to M3 (they won't work in non-Vanos.)

Check with Campiar about using an early vintage M50- he had EWS issues but think he got them sorted out.

EWS issue if you buy a computer manufactured from 1/95. Earlier computers had no EWS.

dont you run into a problem then since the ti has ews and the new motor / ECU won't?

Not really. The new motor doesn't care as long as it doesn't have EWS in the DME. EWS1 can be disabled with a chip if you have it in your DME. EWS2 must be realligned. You may have to disconnect something or cut some wire if your car does have EWS and the DME does not, but I haven't gotten there yet. Anybody?

Can I swap an M50 engine with gear box and drive shaft from an 1993 525i. I can get a whole car really cheap and I was wondering if I can get it to fit the TI.
