I have my eyes on a turbo kit and I was wondering how many other people out there have done turbo kits and what kit did they use? Also, I NEED a dual exhaust for my baby and I wanted to know if anyone had any installed on their cars? | | | 09-16-2003, 03:35 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Most people have gone with Downing Atlanta Superchargers. Dual Exhaust? Why? There really isn't much room underneath there unless you want to get rid of the spare. You would probably be the first. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-17-2003, 03:09 AM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2003 Location: Baltimore, MD Posts: 5 | Why? cause dual exhausts are probably the coolest things. I am an amateur at the whole suped up car thing, but i have seen one ti with the dual exhaust and it was wicked looking. As for the supercharger, I think a turbo would be more fun and there is nothing quite like a blowoff valve in yo ear! | | | 09-17-2003, 05:28 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Don't you need to wait for the turbo to spool up? Supercharger gives you power throughout the power band. You want dual exhausts, knock yourself out. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 10-24-2003, 05:33 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2003 Location: Houston, Tx Posts: 3 | i hate that da supercharger!!! its powerless i think. my friend has one and its sux! and btw with a turbo you can always adjust boost with a control inside the car instead of changing pullys (of which i think da doesn't have) also btw i don't care about the turbo lag. for ex... if your in the middle of an apex, you could just floor it and by the time your out of the turn boost is full and your on your way!! __________________ '96 318ti Sport Alaska Blue-black int Dinan CAI Dinan Stage II software Remus exhaust no res Sparco Torino black x2 | | | 10-24-2003, 06:04 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Marion, IA Posts: 388 | BTW a Turbo is a type of supercharger. Just exhaust driven instead of belt driven. Turbo's are probably more efficient than a mechanically (belt/gear) driven supercharger, however turbo's do have more lag and produce very high temperatures. Remember that when you up the boost a lot with a turbo, the air gets very hot, so you may want an intercooler. Also remember turbo's are generally better for high rpm power rather than low rpm power. The 318ti is absolutely terrible for low end, and unless you want a really peaky powerband (worse than it already is), I would go with a supercharger. As for dual exhaust, I think it is worthless on almost any vehicle but the largest V6/V8's. A small 4 cyl doesn't need much exhaust flow, even if it is heavily boosted from a turbo or supercharger. If you really want the look, just do what all the factory 4 cyl. dual exhaust cars do, and use a muffler with two outlets. One on either end, so you get the dual exhaust look without adding much weight and cost to the exhaust system. And you will probably have to remove the spare tire like someone else was saying. If you do add a turbo, you could probably do away with the muffler entirely, and just split the exhaust pipe towards the back of the car and make it look like dual exhaust. Turbo's quiet the car a great deal, the Neon SRT-4 doesn't even come with a muffler from the factory (from what I understand). Turbo's absorb heat from the exhaust, which reduces the noise produced because the air expands less rapidly when it leaves the tailpipe. This is why the turbo itself get's so hot. If you really want fast acceleration with this car, the cheapest (and most reliable) option would probably be to use an inline 6 from one of the other three series models. Then you will get a lot more flexible power band. You will actually have both low and high RPM power. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
