Iwasn't paying attention, I was looking up parts for MY 4 cylinder engine, that's what I meant. Will the inline 6 be more reliable then a inline 4. I have no experience with inline 4s. | | | 06-15-2012, 07:05 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Fl Posts: 1,353 | Quote: Originally Posted by Dirkk my apology. Except maybe in a motorcycle. Forgot my old volkswagen that had a horizontally opposed 4 cylinder air cooled motor. 40 HP too. Along with their 3-cylinder, 2-stroke, 850cc rally motor of the era, Saab engineers made a rally tuned, turbo version of the V4 that was a beast! A mechanic once told me that, balance shaft problems notwithstanding, one of the reasons they stopped using this motor was that it never broke down (although, this sounds like a bit of a conspiracy theory to me...). | | | 06-17-2012, 07:43 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | Buddy of mine runs one in vintage Rally.. He has the V4 and his dad has the 2 stroke... Great to watch... I don't have much experience with BMWs inline 6 engines as I got my 323ti only 3 months ago but even as I love the M52 with its torque and sound, I think the M44 would be even more reliable as its a simpler engine (mainly it doesn't have VANOS). | | | 08-20-2012, 02:39 AM | #14 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2012 Location: Oregon Posts: 28 | Quote: Originally Posted by Dirkk I've been told that with out a doubt inlines are going to be more reliable in the long run. V, W (VW/Bentley) or inline. The advantage of the inline 6 is it's a smooth firing engine... A V-12 is also a inherently smooth engine. Inline 4's tend to shake at idle (especially) though most modern Inline 4's have 'balance shafts' to smooth them out. | | | 08-20-2012, 03:03 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2011 Location: SoFla Posts: 482 | Less moving parts typically means a more reliable engine. By this logic the I4 should be the more reliable engine, and it is a terrific little bugger(although The I6 is also very reliable) * this logic does not apply to rotaries * __________________ Eurotary 313ti-Rx coming soon.....soon is a relative term | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
